Annoying noise from HVAC fan - Anyone else? - Click HERE for Original Thread

When I switch on my defroster or Heater/AC (Auto/Full Auto), I hear a slight medium/high pitch sound, which sounds like it's coming from the main blower. Could be a bearing. The sound is at a perfect pitch to drive me crazy. For a comparison, I listened to my wife's Taurus SHO, which has absolutely no fan noise (and it's 10 years old!). Does anyone else have an annoying fan noise?

Thanks!

Oh, and I checked the knowledge base and came up empty.

I have similar problem, but it turned out to be from the rear blower (which is located in the center console right next to your right ankle). I never got the noise when using the defroster though, so you might have a different issue.

Easiest way to diagnose is to get in back and set the fan to off with the rear controls. Then when you hear the noise, push the "rear a/c" button to allow the rear to control its own fan. If the noise stops, you know its the rear blower, not the front.

My rear blower is going to be replaced the next time I'm in for service.

Could be:

Dirty blower motor

Failed blower motor bearing

Dirty Cabin air filter not allowing sufficient air flow

Pull the blower motor down and check it.

I have similar annoying noise coming from ac/heater motor mounted underneath the glove-compartment. It started around 10,000 miles and occurs only at certain fan speed. I disassembled the motor housing and the noise appears to come from motor axis or rotor rubbing against the plastic motor housing. Since I know the noise is coming from plastic parts rubbing against each other and not from bearing, I left it alone. When I hear the noise I just crank up the fan speed and the noise disappears. I don't want to take to the Acura dealer and get unnecessary stuff done.

Thanks for your replies. What I'll probably do is change out the pollen filter in the Spring and pinpoint the fan sound at that time.

I had similar problem. Had dealer checkout the main blower unit and they are going to replace under warranty. Asked what the problem was, he said the bearings go bad. So have dealer check it out.

How hard was it to get the blower motor down? Can you give details? Mike is squeaking on low and it drives me crazy when listening to talk radio.

Thanks for your help.

Note - Just put the MDX in the shop today for the drive train shudder - Diagnosed as torque converter.

I too had a loud noise in the front A/c and heater blower fan and when I went to change out the pollen filter, not only was it clogged with dirt and leaves but I also saw the compartment from the blower had leaves also. I got my skinny teenager to get under the dash and remove the blower moter and fan. Sure enough, it was packed with leaves. The top cowling in front of the windshield where the air intake is there are several capped access holes. One of those caps was missing and allowed leaves to be sucked into the air duct. We vacuumed everything out and the blower now runs like new - - no noise and more air flow.
PS To take out the blower motor located under the glove box dash, you need to take of the cover being held by two phillip head screws. Unplug the blower and remove the three star or octagon screws. The back one requires some one small to get in there and we used a articulated ratchet and then turned it by hand once loose. It then just pops out. Don't forget to vacuum and clean out all duct work else the problem will reappear in a week or two.
