Passenger seat airbag detector replaced...but leather looks like crap. Now what? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi gang. Had to take the MDX for the Nth time for service (airbag light). This time the passenger airbag detection switch failed. Had to wait almost a week for it to be ready. When I asked the service advisor what it was, she informed me of the passenger switch. I asked if the one in the seat cushion, and she confirmed my fear: YES. How does it look? Get this: 'Leather looks a bit floppy, but it'll tighten with time' (yeah, right!). I said I wanted the car the same way it went in. She said the 'recall' (there was one for a bunch of Accords, which the MDX is based on, so I guess it's coming folks) only covered a new switch, not new leather. I said I didin't want new leather, or a new seat; just the way it was before.
I asked her if she saw my car and said no. Well, go see it, and if it doesn't look like when I dropped it, I won't take it back. She said would check it out and call me back. She never did.

I'm supposed to pick up the car in the morning, but will wait for her call first. I left her a message after they closed, saying I just want the car like it was before the repair; it wasn't my fault the part failed at 30K miles. Plus how the hell they expect a mechanic to do the job of a professional upholsterer on a $40K+ car? Unbelievable.

I'd like your comments, and what are my options, but I refuse to accept a half a$$ job; hope I'm not being unreasonable, but imagine reselling the car with a seat that looks like you picked it up at a junkyard? Thanks for your help ladies and gentlemen.

Ask her why she didn't call you? Ask if the seat is like before if not don't take it back and re-iterate it. If she wont help ask to talk to the service manager and explain all and how you are very dissatified and you don't find it acceptable.

Thanks for your reply Warzau. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being unreasonable. I was also confused why the lady said leather was floppy when she didn't see the car. I guess it happened before.

That's exactly what I thought: don't pick it up unless they tell me it looks like before. Simple and reasonable request.
Last and only time something similar happened on a Lexus, they ended up replacing the whole seat, but in contrast, I didn't even have to ask for that; they knew the fix was unacceptable.

Will keep you posted. Thanks again.

You're not being unreasonable. If you don't say nothing, they will let drive away like that. Speak up! That's how things get done. I would also confront the advisor about not calling you back and I would mention that in part of an argument (if any) with the service manager.

Update. Lady advisor called this morning and said the car 'doesn't look bad'. I asked if it look like before, and she said no, but you need to come see it. I told her in a firm voice I didn't want to waste my time going all the way there (40+ miles) if the seat wasn't like before the service, and if she could tell it wasn't, then it'd be even more obvious to me.
She finally said it didn't, but manager wasn't in today, so I could keep the loaner, and manager would see it in the morning. I told her to tell the manager that mechanics are trained on mechanical stuff, not upholstery. A professional upholsterer should be able to leave it like it was before, and that's exactly what they should do. Hopefully they didn't mess something up by trying, because a new seat (or seat cover) would look odd where there's wear on the others, but rather have a new seat/seat cover than a crappy job.

Will keep you posted gentlemen, and thanks again for all your help.

Hey guys, forgot to update you. Well, still driving the darn loaner after 2 weeks, if you can believe it. When manager came back to work the next day, he immediately agreed leather looked bad, and called an upholstery place to do the job. What I didn't like one bit is they picked up my car from the dealer and drove away in it. Then I get a call the day after that the cover ripped open; apparently the tech messed it up at the dealer (just like I predicted). They ordered a new cover, and due to the closure of I-10 and weather related delays, it just came in yesterday. I was ready to pick up my car today, and they left me a message I didn't like the tone of, and I immediately thought the stupid upholstery driver crashed my X. They didn't, but the freaking cover was defective, and now they ordered another one. So after who knows how many miles an upholstery guy has put on my X, it'll have to go there for a THIRD time; geez, when is this going to stop????
At least we're driving their loaner, and they apparently will do the job the right way, by a professional upholsterer, but until I get my freaking car, won't declare victory.
Finally, after this episode, I'll DEMAND an extended warranty on that POS part, as the bigger problem is the darn seat cover.
Have a great weekend guys.

Hey Tony, yes, it had been more than 10 years that we saw snow, or a deep freeze for that matter, but we got both, although it was much worse to our east, almost to where you live. In fact, I-10 was closed for more than a day from Ft. Stockton to San Antonio. There were a ton of trucks stranded here, as the only way around this crappy town is I-10. Take care buddy.

Hey gang. Forgot to post. Finally picked up my X on Friday, but on Thursday, after more than 2 weeks waiting, went to pick it up and my brand new battery (I paid for it to get a better one than stock) was run down because the stupid upholstery place left the lights on while working on the car (it was THREE times, in case you didn't read my previous posts), driver's seat had nasty grease stains, and after the 3rd attempt, seat material was all loose on the bottom, and not very well done the rest of the seatback.
Called Acura directly to request a new seat, but as always, 'we'll get back to you later'. Picked up my car on Friday with the bottom fixed, but the seat still looking like an amateur job. Guess there's no way to make it look right without a new seat, since they're professionals (supposedly). Dealer refused to replace my battery, and just charged it, saying to file a claim with the manufacturer if it gave me problems. What a solution, huh?

Anyway, bottom line is if the stupid sensor gives you trouble, seat will NEVER look right if not replaced. Demand a new seat since the beginning. Not a happy experience with dealer... but that's the story of my life, so no surprise there. Take care gang.
