i have read that rather than purchasing an ipod interface, one can burn a dvd with their playlist on it and use the in dash dvd player and it will allow u to see folders, tracks etc...what format do u need to have the music files in, for the mdx to recognize it?

TIA

I am one of the people that actually got the ipod musiclink. and yes, it sucks. Good audio quality but I really hope acura comes out with a firmware upgrade or something so I can at least see the artist and album info from my ipod. Having to first generate text-to-speech files on my laptop and then having to wait for the system to read through the alphabet and then the specific playlist/artist/ etc. is terrible. I don't know what they were thinking. The control knob of the nav system is an excellent replica of the ipod interface, why they don't have better integration is complete beyond me.

Anyway, I've tried making MP3 DVD's They sort of work but I don't like them. First of all you can't put the files in any specific order you want unless you number the file names by hand or with some script. Then the system is slow to read the data from the mp3 tags.

I suggest just getting an ipod, or whatever mp3 player you prefer, and jacking it into the auxiliary input. You'll be happier.

You burn them as a Data DVD and put the files into the Root directory. In my case the Artist is the highest level, then the album, and finially the tracks.

The system is slow as pointed out above, but I put my folders in alphabetical order when I created the DVD's so it is not completely random.

Yeah, see I've got a whole bunch of playlists in iTunes, manually sorted, and I'd like to put them on a DVD. I figured I'd make a folder for each playlist. But then to keep the songs in the order I want I would have to number the file names. Serious pain, there's no way to export that from iTunes without writing some kind of script. More work than it's worth for me. It would be nice if mp3 cd/dvd's could read the info you wanted from an xml file in the root directory. They'd read a whole lot faster and then just navigate directly to the songs.

Anyway, I sure hope someone like dension comes out with better solution for the ipod than acura's musiclink. I'm sure it'll be a long time but at the very least being able to put the id3 info up on the nav screen would be awesome. Album art too would kick butt.

Interestingly, if you burn an MP3 CD from iTunes on teh Mac iTunes automatically appends a number to the title so no need to manually do this.
