I was reading an some of the comments from this website:

http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/...007_bmw_x5.html

Some were comparing the MDX to the X5. I can't believe some of the comments coming from BMW owners. Saying things like "you can't compare an MDX to an X5"...

I'm like WTF are you talking about ppl!!

What do you guys think?

It depends. MDX owns a V6 X5 IMO... But if you want to compare from a pure drivers perspective the TOTL X5 vs the MDX, the X5 is a helluva lot faster.

You pay more for the name in BMW than you do in Acura. Audio wise, ELS is better, navi wise, Acura still rules, and Acura still has the leading AWD system.

Acura does, however, skimp in some of the little things. The cars are very comparable.

I have had two BMW's and even a 1989 Acura Legend Coupe.

Time will tell if service and reliability are comparable. My last BMW was a 1998 M3 Sedan that I recently sold to get this truck (I had it since new). I was never left stranded and service was not always the best. My needs with a family required something more practical.

This site will show Acura as the favorable marque whereas a BMW site will show the opposite. I will say the BMW had a more solid feel but will hopefully not have all the little issues I had in the past with my German cars.

So far things are going well with the truck...

Sure, Acura is not a BMW, but let's make sure we're comparing apples to apples.

Prior to my 2007 MDX purchase, I test drove several X5s. That's when I learned that a X5 3.0 is NOT the same as a X5 4.4 (the 2007 models were not out yet). The X5 4.4 is a superior vehicle to the X5 3.0. Having said so, I don't believe the MDX is comparable to the X5 4.4 -- however, having purchased the MDX, I think it is comparable and perhaps better, at least in terms of value, to the X5 3.0.

I do own a BMW 3 series coupe that I enjoy alot. So I'm fully aware of what both BMW and Acura has to offer.

Both handle well, and SH-AWD closes the gap, but the BMW continues to have a tighter, more precise feel and has a higher quality interior. The Acura, on the other hand, is significantly roomier, especially in the back two rows.

Pricing can be compared using my site. You'll also find links to my reviews of both vehicles there.

In the future, it'll be possible to also compare reliability. But I'm not collecting data on the X5 yet.

Remember that the 2007 X5 is as different from the 2006 as the 2007 MDX is from the 2006... So, you can't compare a 2006 or earlier X5 to a 2007 MDX. If cost was not a factor, I'd definitely buy the BMW.

I wouldn't go quite that far. The 2007 MDX is not simply an evolution of the 2006 MDX. The 2007 X5 doesn't represent as large a change from the 2006.

The main difference between the 2006 and 2007 X5s is the chassis. The new one both rides and handles much better than the old one, at least with the Sport Package. BMW finally bit the bullet and used a double wishbone front suspension and adaptive shocks. If you've got a challenging road, the BMW will be significantly more fun than the Acura, you just feel more connected to what's going on.

I still knocked the new X5 in my review because it offers little more interior space than the X3 and costs so much. BMW can't seem to sort out its SUV line-up. They've got the sport part down, but utility remains lacking despite a substantial increase in the X5's external dimensions.

In my opinion, all European cars to use and throw. Always problematic, even silly things. Window regulators breaking, brake pad changes every year, lot other quality issues. I started leasing those, will never buy them.

Acura/Lexus are to keep for long. Never changed brake pads on my wife old RX300 for 72000 miles. Changed brake pads 3 times from my wallet on my old E320 after warranty coverage is done!!! Almost every 12k. Costs $250 each time on front pads! Now BMW has 4yr/50k maintenance coverage, so that's OK. But after that, these things crop up and not quite right.

First of all, these European car designers need to stop making those dusty pads. Cleaning is an issue too!

I saw dust on X first few days and until first wash, was scared Acura adapted same design. But now not much dust on wheels, Thank god.

I checked out the X5 before I got my X. It looks pretty nice, especially w/ that panoramic moonroof.
The transmission shifter looks nice, but I don't think it is practical at all since you can easily put it in Neutral by just lightly tapping it (which I did when I was playing w/ the radio).
At the end, I chose X since I like the X interior better plus, X5 would come up to be a lot more expensive if you get the same option as the X Sport pkg.

I test drove the X5 right after test driving an MDX; the dealerships were just down the street from one another. The X5 had a great fit and finish and was very enjoyable to drive. The look, feel and handling of the MDX also appealed to me, though I didn’t like its rather unusual-looking grille at first. I close the MDX because it was the complete package for me — great style, performance, comfort, versatility, and technology. For the money, the MDX was clearly the best choice. I wasn’t willing to shell out $55-60K for a comparably equipped luxury SUV/SAV, even with the BMW marquee.

In Canada if you load up the X5 3.0 to have all the options on the top of the line MDX you would have to pay about $18,000 more. Thats a lot!

The price difference is large in the U.S. as well. I think I make this point in my review of one of them, if not both.

The Volvo XC90 falls in between in price, but I have an even harder time justifying its extra cost over the BMW.

And it was a great driving vehicle as are all BMW's in my experience. It was not loaded as much as the comparable MDX would be, but it was fine for us at the time. By the way, the 6 cylinder is a straight 6, not a V6. Extremely smooth engine. It is now putting out way more HP than in '01 and they even have it twin turbo's in the 335i for '07. We traded it for a new '04 MDX and while this is still a very nice vehicle, the '07 has vastly improved the line. Just drove the '07 X5 3.0 six and the 4.8 models. Both very nice, interior very nice, but almost devoid of any of the MDX buttons, etc., on dash. You have to use their I-Drive controller to do almost everything. Style of X5's changed for the better, certainly, the ride and power is improved, but after, we drove the '07 MDX, and liked it more. It even felt like it had more power too. Believe its lighter and that alone makes a big difference in available power. Now, if it had the BMW's awesome 6 speed transmission - it would be perfect! Couldnt use the X5's Nav cause they said that people steal the disk so they dont put it in there anymore.. NIce... :( Think the MDX will win the technology contest easily inside though.. It also felt very comfortable and easy to figure out since we have an '04. We might pull the trigger on an MDX in the near future, wish they had a better color selection, BMW also has not many colors we like either.. DanF

Some folks might say you can't compare the two vehicles. But I sure did. I thought the MDX rode better, handled better, felt more spacious, had more comfortable seating, had many more standard features, better quality interior finishes, was more attractive on the outside, and was much less expensive. That about covers it for me. I did not see any advantage at all in the BMW.
