Buying used 2001 MDX: Should I worry about transmission? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi All,
I am looking to buy a 2001 MDX in few days. 67K. Please suggest me the specific things to look and ask to the owner before buying. As I was reading this forum, tranny seems to be a problem. How do I make sure that, the tranny of this one is ok. I am planning to take it to mechanic, but it would be great if I know beforehand what to check.
One more thing, during a test drive, I saw a "maintenance rqd" light on on the dash board. Is it something to worry about?
Please suggest me to make a right decision.
Regards

As a former owner of a 2001 MDX I would recommend
getting a more recent year(2003-present).Even though I never had any problems with my car scan this board and you will see numerous transmission failures

You cannot verify if the transmission will fail or not.
Taking it to a mechanic will not help you determine if the transmission is going to fail soon.
The transmissions on the 01-02 model do fail at a higher rate than the later 03-06 model. They cost about $4,500 to replace.
The maintenance required light means the previous owner either did not perform oil changes at the right frequency or did not reset the light. It probably means a poorly maintained used vehicle.
Like the other poster suggested, if a $4,500 repair bill for a new transmission will upset you, you should look for another vehicle.

Likewise, I have an 01 MDX still on the original tranny at 114K, but I always have my fingers crossed. If I had to it over again, I would have bought an 03 or newer in order to avoid tranny issues, and also to benefit from the HP gain and VSA, and side curtains, and more modern NAV system on the newer models.

I own a 2001. The transmission has not failed yet (83k miles) but it's always a concern.

I would not recommend purchasing a used 2001 or 2002. The 2003 model started using a totally different transmission design.

I would pay more and get the 2003, or look to a different vehicle.

What he said, even though my 2002 tranny has been perfect, knock on plood.

Thanks all for the replies!
MDX after 2003 is currently out of my budget, though I know they are much better vehicles.
Now I am thinking that, I only buy the 2001, if the owner given me some margin for the possible tranny failure in the future, may be -3grands for his asking price.
If not, I am going for other car.
Thanks a lot and will take any other suggestions!

I wouldn't but a used MDX, period. I got rid of two (a 2002 and a 2003) when I had transmission problems with both of them. I normally keep vehicles until they have in excess of 125,000-150,000, but I get rid of them if they have major problems in the first 50,000-75,000 miles. I suspect others do the same which makes used vehicles, especially those with significant historical problems (like the MDXs and transmissions).

Just my 2 cents.
