I'd heard others mention the speaker (subwoofer) in their 2006 and older MDX's (So equipped) developed a nasty rattle. I knew mine didn't sound as good as one would expect from a stereo with "Bose" on it. But, mine wasn't rattling...
Well, it's making up for lost time now, because this joker rattles like nobody's business. The highs sound good, as does the midrange, but the bass is terrible. Sound like a soda can with 7 or 8 dimes in it.
Aside from an aftermarket box as a solution, will taking this to the dealer resolve this issue, or are the 2001 - 2006 MDX's simply plagued with lackluster stereo systems...
** If you don't listen to new age country, R&B or rap, you'd probably never notice this as a problem- but, if you do- you may be able to relate to my problem...
Example: Jay-Z's (Kingdom Come) Album, track # 5, 6 or 7.
Preferably #5 for most rattle, and for #7 (It's just a very nice groove). |

| Taking it to the dealer should result in them removing the rattle by doing the subwoofer TSB but it won't make the system sound better. |

This "rattle" is generally not in the speaker itself, but instead a loose mounting. Just having the bolts tightened did the trick in my MDX.

Hersh-
Take it from me. You need to do a little work. I had it in twice. Both times resulted in a somewhat lesser rattle which eventually returned a bit. I finally got rid of it myself. Mine had nothing to do with the mounting screws.
I removed their polyfill ( a square 12 x 12 joke) then dyna matted the entire area behind the woofer as far as I could reach. I filled the cavity completely with polyfill. I then placed the sub back in and started the system. I was able to now find an area where two panels met on the left side of the sub. This was a major source of the rattle as was some junk left inside the third row seat armrest by one of the kids. I placed some rolled up dynamat in between this area where the panels met. Put everything back together and 4 months later I still have no rattle.
You should take it in and let them have a crack at it. They will probably reduce it somewhat. But I have no doubt that you will have to tear in to it eventually and find the rattle yourself. I was of the opinion that they should fix it. But after the two visits my time is worth more to me. This whole process took about a half hour and cost less than $40.
Let us know how you make out.

I'm finally getting around to taking it in tomorrow to get this fixed...
I'll also get a 2007 MDX as a loaner/replacement. :)
Gotta love that.
I'll FINALLY get to take one for that extended test drive I'd been hoping for. |

the only thing I'd like to add besides what andreseng said about the filling the sub cavity is that the bass level control could be the culprit. When I ease it off upto center i.e. no or very little bass boost the bass cleans up a lot. Try it. You might have to adjust the fader and treble to blend with the new setting but in my experience I get the best sound when I leave all controls centered or a little off as per taste or track.
actually I went a step further and applied dampening material to the back wall of the subwoofer which is nothing but the metal body of the car. |

Ah! you did! sorry for the oversight.
Did you do the doors or just the sub cavity ? |

| Just the sub cavity. But I have long arms so i reached in there pretty far. I didn't do the doors because I've never heard them rattle. Do/did yours rattle? Did you also find the place on the left side of the panel where it looks like two panels meet? There is a gap between them and that was one of my biggest sources of vibration. Rolled up some dynamat and stuck it in there and haven't heard from it since. |

no they dont rattle at all. Its more for cutting out road noise and for better sound by eliminating/reducing the back wave reflection of the speaker. An all-metal enclosure is the worst type of speaker enclosure.
Standing outside even at moderate volume you can hear the doors singing like a diaphram.
I remember seeing that gap where the panels meet but it wasn't the source of rattle for me. I stuffed it anyways. |
