Acura Announces January Sales
Light Truck Sales Set New January Record

TORRANCE, Calif. 02/01/2007 --

Propelled by sales of the all-new 2007 MDX luxury performance SUV, Acura sold a January record of 5,951 light trucks, up 48.7 percent versus last year, the division announced today. The previous record of 4,165 was set in January 2004.

Overall, Acura began 2007 with sales of 13,017 units sold for the month, down 10.6 percent from a year ago based on the daily selling rate that included one fewer day than last January.* MDX led Acura sales for the month with 4,153 units sold, eclipsing its total from a year ago by 3.8 percent and making it the model's second-best January ever.

"We are certainly pleased with the way customers have reacted to the new MDX," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president, sales. "The combination of its dynamic styling and track-tuned performance have really hit home."

Continuing its steady sales pace, the turbocharged RDX crossover SUV sold 1,798 units for the month. Meanwhile, sales of the TSX sports sedan totaled 2,628 units.

I'll have to see if I can find the actual numbers for each model.

Holy crap!! The RL is really tanking!!!

So the last three months of sales for the MDX look like this:

Nov - 6086
Dec - 6227
Jan - 4153

That's quite a drop for a month! I am hoping this is good news going forward and that the pricing will loosen up a bit on these. They only sold 3.8% more of the new ones this month than the old 1st gens in Jan of 2006!

I've only seen 3 new MDX's on the road so far. One driving down a main road, one outside Shell and another at a Target's parking lot. Everyone keeps the new MDX in the garage at home or what's up with that?? (I've seen plenty of the 01-06 ones in the same few months.)

I'm wondering what will happen in the next few months. Has Acura priced this SUV too high and it will start to go the way the RL did? I realize competition has increased but a 33% hit in sales in one month must say something, right? Hopefully pent up demand has been exhausted and we can expect lower prices in the months ahead. :29:

What seems to be missing in the MDX data is how many of the Nov and Dec sales were 2006 models and how many were 2007 models. Also, there's no way of telling how many of the RDX sales might have been MDX sales if the RDX didn't exist.

Especially with the deals so good for the 06 model.

That's a good point. In my mind then , the new sales numbers are not that impressive at all if a fairly good chunk of those numbers may be 06 models (although I would think most of the 06s were sold by October??). February will be interesting to see where the sales fall.

A 3.8% increase vs. last January doesn't sound very good, however, I think you need to look at average selling price. Last year Acura had to subsidize leases, and dealers had to discount to move the 1st generation.

Comparing January's sales to December and November is very misleading due to seasonal differences in car buying (especially in cold climates).

I also get the feeling that sales are less than anticipated, and discounting will increase soon, however, I think we need more data to confirm.

I agree MDX88. Kind of hard to establish anything with only three data points, however I don't think it looks promising. Acura sales as a whole are off over 10% compared to Jan 2006. February sales numbers should be telling. We'll see.

This data seems to echo what alot of us old timers were screaming prerelease. That when you raise your pricepoint to where the big boys play you are going to lose some of your core customers who previously sought "near" luxury and value.

I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt our next suv will not be a new MDX. We are in the market now probably pulling the trigger between now and September. And I will tell you there are a hell of alot more players in the SUV market now then there were in '02.

Although I personally dont care for the new design I really dont think thats whats hurting the numbers. In the long run I think it will bear out that Acura ignored what built its base by trying to make their image more upscale.

Couldn't agree more!

You think Acura would have learned with the RL at $50,000 - a big flop.

I see that the '07 is already being heavily discounted.

I predict that next the leases will be supported and for '08 they will add content without raising prices.

I have put 4,500 miles on '06 since November and couldn't be happier. Glad I got it rather than an '07 at MSRP!

I agree why buy a 07 when the 06's were discounted and were already very nice rides. I looked at the 07's and was not very impressed over the 06 and would not consider spending the $$$ on the 07 Acura. To many other nice Mid size SUV's on the road that are less $$$ and offer almost the same room/quality and have much better MPG... Full size SUV's are starting to tank in the market. Also not impressed on the resale values of the 01-06's...

Yep, if Acura doesn't drop an hot & sexy RL, the RL will soon disappear. If I'd known they were desperate to sell RL's, I'd have gotten one (It's a nice car), but too small and too pricey to compete at the dollar point for which it's trying to compete...

Not many people are going to pay $47 - $50K for a car that's smaller than a Nissan Altima, and slower, even if it does have a few more toys... Not when you can have near equal luxury, and a much lower payment if you were to choose an ES350, GS350, M35, M45, 525, and more...

The RL needs to become a real full-size, or near full size (definitely larger than midsize) sedan. The size this one is, woudl be perfect for a "coupe" version of the RL.

The RL is in the same size pool as the TL, that's not helping the RL either.

Acura, in my opinion, needs to drop the TSX and RSX- lower the MSRP of the TL, put the RL on a new frame, and redesign the RDX as soon as possible.

MDX is a hit.
RL needs to be bigger, and sexier.
TL is fine.

This doesn't fit the Acura/Honda theme, but, a full-size SUV wouldn't hurt... The QX-56 has probably done more to keep Infiniti alive, than any other vehicle in their line up, except maybe the G35.

They routinely roll a doughnut with the "Q45", which happens to be one of my favorite cars...

Aside from the Acura Legends (1995 - 1997) and 1994 - 1996 Chevy Impala SS's, the only brand I see that can go through many years and/or a body style change, and not take a huge hit on resale value, is Lexus brand vehicles...

I was looking at a 2003 LX470, 4 years old- and they still want $43,000 - $45,000 for it. Most cars/trucks over 3 years old are only worth 40 - 50% of MSRP. This truck is 4 model years old, and still worth 66% of MSRP.

Not that it's been through a model change recently, but to hold it's value that well- is amazing, yet disappointing for the would-be buyer...
