The best one depends upon your criteria. I used to use only Craftsman. I was very satisfied with these for many, many years.
However, several years ago these got too squat and fat to suit me. Just took up too much space in the garage as I always bought the most powerful vac that they made. Therefore, my current vacuum is a 10 gallon ShopVac of 6.5hp. It is more tall and skinny than the Craftsman. However, it does have the disadvantage of being easier to tip over. It is quite powerful and useful for all type of jobs.

Wow. You all need shop vacs to clean out your vehicles? I've seen some cars that have a lot of dirt in them, but I think a 10 gallon vacuum is overkill for even those cars.
I just use the hose off my Dyson home vacuum to do the interior of my car. I take the mats out and run the vacuum over them like I would any other carpet.
If you all want something really portable, Dyson just came out with a handheld one that they say would be good for cars. I didn't buy it because I thought it was a bit long and awkward to use compared to just the hose from the regular vacuum. |

A shop vac for a car is hard to maneuver the hose as they tend to be too big and stiff.
If you get a shop vac, make sure you listen to it running. Some are very noisy and actually hurt your ears over long periods of use. |

| As Supertech said, what an OVER KILL with a dry/wet vac. I use this for all my vehicles.....granted I have NO brats (kids/pets) contributing...... |

I do not have the time nor money to purchase different vacuums for different jobs. I buy the biggest and best vac that I can find that will take care of all of my vacuuming needs.
Do not find that the 2" diameter or 3" diameter hose to be any problem getting where I need it. Never found one that was particularily stiff. Of course I do not live in real cold country and that would probably make a difference.
You always want to use a vacuum that will pull the dirt out by the roots. Just cleaning the surfact only makes the carpet look good. Doing a deep cleaning makes the carpet last longer.
SuperTech, I would think that taking an interior vac out to clean a vehicle would be a lot more awkward than using a Craftsman/ShopVac or whaterve more specialized. I sure would not want to use that puny little hose and attachments on my wife's upright. It is great on indoor carpet where the beater bar performs its function but does not seem to be of much use with just the suction hose.
Good day to all.

To dot the i and cross the t:
I've got the Large Dry/Vac for house/pool/cleaning out the smoker log housing unit chores
I've got the mini one too for cleaning out my pool filter housing unit (large on is TOO big)
I've got a mini green machine if coffee is spilled on the auto carpet. Even have a fancy smacy one from Dave at autiopia that is like the old can style......
Upright works for my vehicle needs.....  |

I found this amusing as well as ironic. You speak of overkill than mention a $500 vacuum?? :2: ;)

| Ordered a Metrovac on-line. They are made in the USA and apparently alot of professional detailers use them. I even bought a small one that blows warm air to dry my 2 GSD's - again, what pro dog groomers use.. I will let you know how they work, Im really looking forward to getting them. They also sell these in Griot's catalogue but they are marked up.. DanF |

Ah, but the hose on my Dyson stretches out over 15 feet if I want. Plus I can attach this little guy to the hose if I want something with a beater bar...

If you're gonna have just one vacuum...might as well be a good one. I mainly bought the thing becaue I was curious as to why is was sooo much more expensive than most of the others a the stores.
I moved into a brand new apartment (yes I bought a $500 vacuum to live in an apartment). The carpet was brand new. They vacuumed it all before I moved in anyways. I decided to go over it all with the Dyson before I started bringing in the furniture. I was amazed at how much it picked up. It's not just hype...the Dyson really does work. |

1. My gfs highly recommend the dyson but too expensive a gamble at the hands of my boys who love to vacuum (and break/lose the accessories)
2. The $200 kenmore doesn't seem to have enough suction to pickup tiny pebbles, straws and other sticky things that my boys have the knack of bringing along.
3. I see my neighbors using some kinda shopvacs that I assume has great suction power and hence this thread.
4. I also plan to buy this cute looking dry/wet vac at brookestone for our road trips.
I prefer a separate vacuum that I also use for the garrage (my husband prefers to use the blower) and I wouldn't want to use the same one indoors. Thats just me :D |

| Beware of the Shop Vac Detailing Kit. The Brush attachment has sharp edges beneath the bristles that will scratch surfaces quite easily. |
