I really want to get an MDX but the transmission discussion scrares me. Is there a way to avoid these problems (best model, best years). How would I know if a transmission had been replaced looking at a used MDX and does replacement ensure the failure won't occur again? I know you folks know better than any salesperson I may encounter.

Avoid the 2001/2002 model years. They are the problem years and if a tranny has been replaced (Acura can tell you by looking up the service history), the replacement is just as likely to fail. There are instances of multiple transmission replacements. 2001/2002 model years get a poor transmission reliability rating from Consumer Reports. The tranny was redesigned in 2003 and that model year jumped to a very good tranny reliability rating. The 2004/up models are now rated as excellent. Just avoid the 2001/2002 years and you should be fine.

I just recently traded my 02 X in for an 07. I did have the recall service performed on my MDX but never had a single problem with the transmission in the 5 years I owned it. However, it only had 47000 miles on it when I sold it. I would guess the people that have problems either use the X to tow boats or trailers or have high miles. Or maybe I just dodged a bullet. It would be interesting to note if people that had problems also delayed having the recall service and jet installed to adequately cool the 3rd gear (I think it was the 3rd or perhaps the 4th).

There were a number of owners/forum members who experienced failures who 1) did not tow, 2) did have the recall performed, and 3) had low mileage. That would probably be the reason for the tranny redesign. Of course, not every vehicle is going to experience a tranny failure - your chances are just much higher with the 2001/2002 model years.

Unfortunately, even owners who never towed and did recommended maintenance had failures, some before the first recommended trans service. 2003 seems better than 2001-02, but they are not as old yet.
