I'm looking to install either the Sport Running Boards or the Side Step on a Billet Silver MDX. I don't care if there is a price difference.
Which one do you think would be better?
I haven't seen any Mdx's with the Sport Running Boards except in some pictures but it's hard to see.
Are the Sport Running Boards wide enough? How do they look in reality on the car?
Which one should I get?
Thanks ! |

Got Sport running boards self installed, PIA any way to install.
They are more ornamental than for use! Comes on the way when stepping out! I can't figure out how to put a leg on it and get out! Getting in, may be I can step on it and get on!
So far found useful to wash the top of X as I am doing it myself. Aslo my bimmer wheels get dirty fast, so got a 1500 Husky pressure washer and doing it myself! |

rsg: They look very nice. (Your MDX looks very nice as well)
I have a pressure washer too. It's great for washing the cars!
Do the sport running boards hide the exhaust under the car?
(from the side you can see the exhaust)
Are the side steps coming out more than the sport running boards or is it just an impression? |

| Here is a pic I found of the sport running boards |

| And one of the side steps |

| From these pictures it seems that the side steps are coming out more. Look at the bar and rear tire... |

Yep, I haven't seen an X with steps like you posted.
They seem to come out more than sport style one.
WHen you look from front directly, you don't even see we got running boards. One gotta see it from side.
Funny, when I installed them myself, wife had to drive one day with just one side installed. Took me a lot of time. So Thursday night I installed one. Then one on Friday!!! Finally done!!! I should have get the dealer do it for 90$. Got the bars from E-bay fro 430$ shipped.
Some spots/nut holes are tough to reach and screw them on and didn't have a strong power tool and wrenches to start with! |
|
|
| rsgacura |
| oops, yeah, sport ones hide the exhaust pipe. Not sure about steps with the gap between bar and body! |
|
|
| rsgacura |
Also sport ones stop dirt falling on body side more. The whole side is covered so water/mud/dirt won't splash on the sides.
That means less washing, especially mine is black and I am just very particular to keep it clean!b |

I found a website and the prices seems reasonable to me....
http://www.curryacuraparts.com/mdx07.html
They sell the Sport Running Boards for 439 and the Side Step for 529.
I'm leaning towards the Sport Running Boards. |

I checked ebay. Doesn't ship to Canada...
I found some other ones about the same price range. I need to contact them for shipping prices for Canada.
Most of them ship with UPS which are known on charging Canadians enormous duty and brokerarage fees.
I ordered a book for $50 US and paid brokerage fee of $40 CDN.
Why???? It's just a book for godsake!!
I need to find one with USPS. |

Corry - Where did you find those big accessory photos? I've been looking for something better than the Acura website and those are great.
Thanks |

Sport boards are the way to go I think..
- Hide metal parts "hanging" under sides
- Great for putting things on/off roof rack or washing top of car
- Look cool, sturdy |

I bought the side steps on my '07 instead of running boards. I had running boards on my '02 MDX and I hated the way snow and other crud got stuck in the seam between the running boards and the body of the vehicle. I also think the side steps are more "sporty" looking, but that's a personal taste thing. I also liked the way the side steps complimented the look of the roof rack I also added.
One draw back is that the side steps seem to stick out further (as noted by others), which means there's a greater likelihood of getting crap on the back of your left calf as you exit the driver's seat. I'm just extra careful to avoid this from happening. But I'm also 6'5", so maybe it's easier for me than some others to reach past the side step as I get out.... |

I got Sport Running boards on mine.
I planned to install them myself, knowing that I can do it. When I went to my dealer, they gave a long speech about warranty blah blah blah (c'mon, it's an external accessory). When I checked the price w/ and w/o installation, I just said ... no thanks.
I then bought my stuff online at
http://www.hondacuraworld.com/ (no relationship to them whatsoever, except a satisfied customer).
The prices for the parts are reasonable; they provide installation manuals (heck, you can check them out before hand to see if it is something you can tackle); and they only charge a handling fee of $3.95.
So far I got all my accessories for from -- sport boards, roof rack and rail, mats, carge cover and net. Pretty solid people. |

| I went with the sport running boards .... they integrate (looks wise) with the body nicely. They are for looks more than anything though. It's kind of tough to avoid them with your leg exiting the car. |

I checked out both the sport running boards and the side steps for my black/taupe MDX. I chose the sport running boards for precisely the reasons listed by krafty81 ... especially the "cool" factor.

Thanks guys!
The problem is that I like them both !!!!
I'm not sure how the sport running boards will look with the Billet Silver.
I have seen a lot of Black MDX's and both Running Boards and Side Step look nice on Black....
Hard to decide... |

| I've had the side steps on both my '02 and '06 and always thought they looked and worked better than the running boards, but the sport running boards for the '07 look like the obvious choice for the new design. |

The problem I have is that I have only seen the running boards in the pictures.
I would like to see one up close. I want to see how wide they are and how much stability you have when you step on them.
From the pictures they don't seem wide enough to actually step properly on them.
They seem more just for looks.
I have seen the steps and they are ok. The come out a little more than the running boards (from looking at pictures)
My dealer only has the steps installed on the demo vehicles. No boards installed...
Maybe I shoud just drive around the mall parking lots on the weekend to find one.... :) |

Sport running boards are for looks and extra protection of whole body side from mud/dirt splash. Unless you put leg close on it, there is a danger of slipping and falling too! Steps look coming out more and may be easy to step on them! But shows body under cover as there is a gap. For me, Sport ones gave an extra advantage of getting on them to hand wash the top.
I am still not conviced either way how do we/one use it.
To get in, one puts the left leg or right leg on board/step to get in? Put the left leg on it, and pull yourself in to the seat? If I use right leg, first sit in the seat and then move the legs? Little bit confusing. So never used them to get in!!! To get out, just putting leg farther from the board end and getting out for now! |

| To me, they are not terribly functional with the exception of using them to reach onto the roof of the vehicle. I got mine because I didn't dig the naked look. I like the look of running boards/side steps on these types of cars. I don't use them for getting in and out. I'm also tall, so I'll have to ask the wife if she uses them. |

| I put the sport running boards on mine because they look good and my 2 and 4 year old could not get in without them. With the Sport boards they are now able to get in the X. |

I've had running boards on '01, and I have brushed aluminum steps on '05, so I speak from experience. Functionality-wise, I use them only when I'm either cleaning the roof, or (very rare) transport something on the roof rails; my wife uses them more frequently - during rain or snow, steps make it easy getting in/out (avoiding stepping into a pool of water, or a pile of snow). Running boards helped keep the lower sides cleaner, but as one poster mentioned during winter the snow builds up under them. With side steps, it's a major pain to keep them clean, side panels are sprayed with mud.
Today I went for 15k service and hanged in a showroom to check out fully loaded '07 demo, with sport running boards. Although they look (to me) as a cheaper knockoff of X5's, they do look better on '07 than side steps or running boards. My concern would be when it snows (or rain that turns to sleet), will they be useful or completely frozen 'cause it's easier to keep the snow off plastic than aluminum?
Btw, here is the stock photo of running boards (similar to above photos of sport boards and side steps):

| Sport boards and roof rails. They make the vehicle look finsihed! |
|
|
| dshedrick |
| Yeah, roof rails are a must. I'm thinking the steps though. I guess it's a matter of opinion. Though I think the steps go well w/ the blk X. |

I got the roof rails... they came with it.
I still can't decide between the sport boards and the side steps.
I can't believe it!
I haven't seen not even one new MDX on the road yet !!!!
I drive to work every day about 50km one way and I haven't seen one X on the road...
Are they not selling that well in Toronto? |

hey corry. i actually have the sports running boards on mine. i have billet silver and it looks damn nice. i use it to just wipe stuff off the top of the roof. i am 214 lbs. i step on it and jump up and down on it with no problems at all. very sturdy. when my mechanic hoisted my car up to do under coating for my car see that it's bolted to the body 3 bars under body, and 2 attachments one on each end towards each wheel well. very very sturdy and strong. i recommend the sports running board. if you want pics i can try to take some and upload it if you you want. but definitely very cool |

Corry, As requested, pics of the running boards. Not sure if I like them though but I'm okay with it since they are very functional. They'll be handy when the wife or I load our baby into and out of the vehicle. They appear to stick out more than they do on my 03 Honda Pilot with running boards. This is probably because the Pilot's side doors are boxier than the MDX's. I have also ordered the fender garnish. I'm guessing that these pieces should even things up a bit and make the running boards appear even with the width of the car.
I didn't choose the sport boards because I don't like how they reflect on the side of the car. They also remind me of the nasty looking aluminum steps people use on their conversion vans. I also have short ladies in my family so I think the running boards are easier for them to use. I didn't choose the chrome steps because they were too flashy and appear more at home on a more rugged off road vehicle. The running boards are understated and functional. Just like me lol. But to each his/her own.
