Issue when slowing down - Click HERE for Original Thread

Wife's 06 MDX with 10K on it. We are in a serious cold snap here and temps have been 5 degrees and lower last two days.

Once each day, while slowing down, the brakes have stopped working - just for a second or two. Car was warm and she describes it as being on ice - even though she was on a dry street and there was no ABS pulse. She is decelerating when this happens.

I asked her if the VTM is/was on, and in checking, the VTM is not only off, but will not turn on.

Anyone have anything like this? Any clues?

It might be an Anti-lock Brake (ABS) issue. When the ABS kicks in it can sometimes feel like you have lost brake power. I know you said whe did not feel any ABS pulse, but I would not be surprised that is the problem.

You only state that your wife was slowing down. I assume, based upon your question, that this slowing down included using the brakes.

It could very well be - but like I said, the roads are dry (salt covered and cold but dry). Obviously if she was on black ice, the symptoms would be the exact same (provided all four tires hit the ice at the same time).

I have 05 MDX and I experienced the similar problem. I was slowing down as well and the brakes started to grab and stopped working. The car started to jerk for a couple of seconds and the problem disappeared. I came to a complete stop and proceeded to go forward and it happened again without stepping on the brake. It happened three more times in about 100 yard distance. There was snow on the ground that day but this happened once before on dry road as well.

I decided to take it to a Acura dealer close by and they replaced a brake light switch. They replaced it but one week later it happened again. Now its back at the dealer's shop and unfortunately they tell me that they were not able to duplicate the problem. If that was the case the first time how did they determine that the brake light switch was the cause of the problem?

Tomorrow Acura engineers from California were to be at that dealership for a different car and would look at my car as well. Hopefully they can find out what is going on.

Please let me know what you learn.

On my 06, it seems as if I can't get the ABS to work.
On my 01, the ABS seemed to work with just medium pressure on the brake.
Even when I try to press hard on the 06, it seems as if the car isn't going to stop in time and there is no pulsing.

I only have 7,361 miles on it.

I got my car back last Tuesday and the dealer states that there is no problem that they can determine. In their invoice, it states that they test drove the car in all conditions for 5 miles and could not duplicate the problem. I was told to just pick up the car. How true it was that Acura Engineers would look at my car I don't know, it could have been just to appease me when I was there the second time.
Just the other night it happened again twice. The road was dry and it happened again. I don't know what I should do. If they cannot duplicate the problem that does not mean the problem does not exist. I'm stuck in what I should do next. Any advice?

I think you could ask an acura technician to go on a test-drive with you and pray that the problem occurs again during the test-drive.

Hmm, have you had them check to see if there are any brake line leaks? It sounds like you can get enough action out of the brakes - something is preventing the pads from making sufficient contact. I don't think an ABS issue would be represented in this manner... Either you get a pulse, or you get no pulse, and full brake action.

I wonder if the brake lines were bled properly?
