Hi All:
This is my first visit to this site and it looks like a good group. Hope you can help me out.
I have a 2002 MDX which I bought used 2 years ago with 60,000 km. I now have just under 104,000 km on it and on Saturday while driving to the ski hill my Check Engine Light came on. On the way home I went to pass another vehicle and the rev's shot up and then down. Seemed like the torque converter was slipping. Seemed not too bad on the highway, but back in the city with stop and go driving, rev's and gear changes were all over the place. I have never noticed or experienced any problems before but did notice last summer when on the highway with the cruise control on, when going up a hill the tranny would shift down one gear to maintain set speed but the engine rpm's would jump up about 1000 rpm, then drop 500 rpm before dropping back to the original rpm when it shifted back to 5th gear. Couldn't figure out why it would have two different rpm's for one gear (???).
I checked the code with an OBD II scanner (I work in a diesel emissions lab where we certify engines and have such equipment)and the code was "P0740 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction" and "P1750 Manufacturer Specific Powertrain Trouble Code".
Took it to one of two Ottawa, Accura dealers and they say I need a new transmission which will be over $6000 with taxes. They said that because it's over the 100,000 km warranty they can't do anything about it. I called Accura Canada Customer Service and explained the situation to the rep. He said he'll call the dealership and check it out but he didn't seem too hopeful that I'd get any help.
The tranny did have the recall performed on it before I purchased the vehicle and I do most of the routine maintenance myself. Does anyone here have any info I may be able to use for ammuntion if Accura Canada comes back with a "too bad" answer. |

104K KM is about 65K miles. The general trend in the US has been that Acura covers all or most of the cost up to about 100K miles (160.9K Km). I'd push Acura Corporate to cover it because the 2001/2002 model year transmission problems and Acura's replacement beyond the standard warranty period are well known and documented. |

The tranny problems for 02/02 are well known and documented and as JLS has pointed out Acura both in the US and Canada have been standing behind their product (as they should). I would recommend you call up Acura and speak with a customer service manager and mention your awareness of the well known and documented defect (pls peruse a number of prior threads on the subject in this forum) backed up with evidence of Acura's replacement of defective trannies in the past, this should hopefully resolve your problem.
I would also recommend you get a second opinion from the other Acura dealer as I suspect you have been given short shrift by the one you consulted (probably because of absence of prior patronage as I understand you did your own routine maintenance etc). |

Thanks JL_SS and mhassan for your feedback and help.
I haven't heard back from Accura Customer Service yet, but I did talk to the service rep at the dealership. He said Customer Service had called him to discuss the issue but that he was concerned by the lack of service history at the Accura dealer since I do most of the maintenance myself. For one, the dealer is about 25 minutes from where I work and live, and I work at a government emissions lab where my job is to test engines, so it's not like I don't know what I'm doing.
My son and I also have a hobby tuner car, a 1991 Accura Integra which we do most of the work on ourselves. It's my son's daily driver in the summer and is in the garage all winter. It's really a beautiful car. I wish the MDX had a standard tranny like the Integra as they are bullet proof!
Sorry, but since I'm new to this, could you tell me how to access the related threads other than going individually through all of the postings? Is there a way to search just the related years and problems?
Thanks again for your help. It's greatly appreciated. |
