Have had my 04 Mdx for about 3 weeks and need to know if the following is normal:

When I park on a hill and shift from Park to Reverse or D5, it is kind of loud and doesn't shift as easy/smooth as if I was parked on level ground.

Normal?

Don't recall my Accord doing this.

Thanks.

Unfortunately... it is normal. It goes something like this to prevent that from happening...

Standard procedure before leaving the MDX:
1. Keep your foot on the brakes.
2. Move the stick into P.
3. Step on the parking brakes really hard (or may need to have the parking brakes adjusted)
4. Release your foot from the (regular) brake pedal
5. Shut down and leave
(you can do steps 2 and 3 at the same time)

Procedure after starting the MDX:
1. Step on the (regular) brakes and keep it there
2. Step on the parking brake pedal to release it
3. Shift into R or D5
(you can do 2 and 3 together because your foot is on the brakes from step 1)

Thanks for the reply. Glad it is normal.

That is normal and the correct procedure in ANY vehicle. I follow that sequence everytime I park and leave a vehicle. Just cannot get my wife to do same, so everyting I get in hers and try to release the brake I am actually setting it.

Here is the proper way:

When you have found your location on a hill or incline
1) Put your X in "N"
2) Press on the emergency brake
3) allow the X to roll against the brake system (not the transmission)
4) Put it in park

This way when you put it in "R" or "D", release the emergency brake and NO CLUNK SOUND will happen.

MDXX3 didn't explain it correctly!

I don't have to put it into N on mine to let it roll against the brake system. The brake system really shouldn't have to move more than 0.080 inch or something like that (so, for me it's pretty much a negligible step). However, if you have to do so on yours, then I guess you will have to.

Anyway, the first time the big clunk sound happened, I thought the MDX needed a new transmission!!

What I do is keep my right foot on the brake peddle and shift her to "N", then press the emergency brake peddle with my left foot, remove my left foot off the brake peddle so the X rolls against the brake system, then put her in Park, thus avoiding the famous C L U N K noise.....

Hmm... one step sounds missing. If you let the MDX roll against the parking brakes, this means we'll have to release the (regular) brakes. If we don't step back on the (regular) brakes, then the split second when we go from N to P, the vehicle may move since it has to go thru R (before getting to P).

I meant with the right foot release it because you have the emergency brake on, let her roll against the brake system, then put her in park.....I've been doing this for years now....

If I don't follow the procedure, will it hurt the transmission?
