| Recommendations for used MDX checks before purchase, 2001 Warranty?

I am looking at buying a very well cared for 2001 MDX Touring with 50K miles from a good friend - he took great care of the car and intended to keep it forever but he got posted overseas and now needs to sell.
We are bringing the car to a dealer today to have it looked at. The Acura dealer has a $150!!! used car checkover fee. Is there anything specific we should ask them to review?
Has anybody recently got a 2001 tranny fixed under the original "warranty" - 3 years after the original "official" warranty expired? This care was gently driven, recalls were done and there is none of the "usual" indicators of MDX tranny failures. I know the TL warranty goes to 7 years, 109K miles.
Does anybody have experiences with a 3rd party warranty firm that would cover a potential future tranny problem? Is it worth it?

Acura has not extended the MDX warranty as it has on the TL and CL. Many people have had good experience having corporate paying to replace the tranny under goodwill, and as has been observed, they usually do it if the mileage is relatively low.
I don't have any firsthand experience with a 3rd party warranty so I can't vouch for those, but you may be able to get an Acura Care warranty. Ask Tim at hondacuraworld (one of the sponsors here) since he sells probably the lowest priced Acura warranty around.
The $150 you were quoted might be worth it, as long as they are thorough and ask them to check if any of the TSB's were done, as well as the tranny oiljet recall.
There are still many satisfied first gen owners here who have dodged the tranny failure bullet, and we don't know the actual failure rate. It's definitely higher, and more than 3%, as can be deduced from CR ratings.
