LAZY question:
When is the FIRST oil change recomended? I know about the oil life indicator, but I'm from the old school....... |

The owners manual states not to change the initial oil until the MID tells you to.
I am old school as well and only have 1950 miles so far, but in the past have always changed my oil initially around 1,000 miles and then every 3-4k for mineral and 10k for synthetic. |

I have been told to leave the factory stuff in for the recommended time because of the additives it has for break in, and after that we will switch to M1 and go with the maintenance computer.

If, and I have yet to see any official data about breakin additives, there are breakin additives I figured they had done their job by 1,800 miles. I did my first oil change at that point and went with full synthetic. I think the chance of removing any left over machining particles is more important that any possible breakin additives. I probably would have changed before that but it was impracticable.

Tim has said that the engine contains a molybdenum additive with the initial oil from the factory. He said that it is recommended to wait to change the initial oil as directed in the manual. To each his own, but that was good enough for me.
Molybdenum sulfide is useful as a lubricant, especially at high temperatures where oils would decompose.

| I asked the same question when I first got the X, and my salesguy's answer was "Call us with the code". My initial reaction was "Really?". I don't put much faith in electronics, so we'll see how it goes. I'm at 50% oil life now. I peeked under the hood and it looks like a tougher job than on the 01. I wish Acura had made it more like the RDX, as SuperTech observed. |
