I'm already getting mails from my dealer to take it in for a 3,750 miles oil service.
Just curious how much (and where) you guys are paying for this.

You shouldn't get communication from your dealer unless the onboard indicator is sending a message via AcuraLink that you need to change oil already. |

Less than a dollar for a crush washer.
Approximately ten dollars for a premiun filter.
Six dollars a quart for 4 1/2 quart of full synthetic oil.
Less than thirty eight dollars for the full change.
Do not even have to jack the vehicle. I am 6' and 210lbs and fit under fine.
Takes less than 30 minutes including the coffee break.
I cannot drive anywhere and have the oil changed as fast as I do it in my driveway.

3750 sounds like the oil change window for the previous generation TL we had. It does drive me a bit crazy that they know the car has the maintenance minder but still want to do old school intervals.
My Acura dealer was touting the 'service package' to complete all maintance to the 45,000 or 60,000 mile mark.
The cost was $1000 and $1500 respectively. And they said that was at a 40% discount. Looks like it included oil change every 5,000 miles, differential fluid (think that is right) every 15,000 miles and 1 brake fluid change. Of course this included the 'inspection' every time you were in for service.
As a side note they also wanted $1900 for the 'store' extended warranty. A sponsor here sells the Acura 100K warranty (0 deductible) for $1210. |

For those of you that change your own oil, what do you do with the used oil? Thats the thing that prevents me from doing it myself.
Not too crazy about driving to the nearest gas station with a very spillable bucket of dirty oil in the trunk. |

AutoZone and similar car parts stores will dispose of your oil, and so will Walmart SuperCenters. Get a sealable oil bucket/pan if youre concerned about spilling. |

Auto parts houses or just about any place that changes oil will take your old oil. Auto Zone even gives you the used container back. I buy my oil in 5 quart containers and put the used oil in that. If you do not have that then just about any gallon container with a lid will hold what comes out of the MDX. Even an old milk jug.

| If you do it yourself, can you reset the minder maintenance system? Seems that should be done as well... |

| My dealer charges $35.99 (Chicago North Shore). |

When I had Honda/Camrys in the beginning, Uncle Ed/other oil service used to be $20 - $30. Lexus with all cleanup/etc was running $100 or so. For just oil change, even at dealer was $39 or so. My old Mercdes after warranty costs $250 on service A, $350 odd on Service B intervals!
BMW for now is covering the maintenance with in lease time! Hope the Acura costs are just like Lexus.
Synthetic oil 8+ quarts costs $40 or so. So just an oil change at Acura/Lexus for $40 is way reasonable! Just cleanup the X ourself and save 50/60 bucks. |

| I asked a local Acura dealer and he said around $35 for an oil change. This is in the Seattle area. |

Holy crap! I just happened to bring my 'X in for a simple oil change today and they charged me $77.70!
The invoice states that "customer requested 33,750 mile service" which is totally untrue; all I asked for was an oil change using Mobil1.
Looks like I will be giving the service manager at Acura of Bellevue a call tomorrow...

Yes. Shows how in the owners manual.

| $24.95 at the dealer, plus they hand wash the car and vacuum the interior. |

Interestingly the sales guy at the bellevue store told me it was about $35... Maybe I just drive a few more miles and go to the Seattle dealer.
Weren't you shown a preliminary invoice that you signed? It should have shown what they were planning to do. |

Yeah, they showed me the invoice (like they always do) and I ignored the details (like I always do). It wasn't until I saw this thread that I started to question things.
I called the dealership today and they confirmed that an oil change with Mobil1 is $69.00. I'm a busy person and I guess I'll just continue to pay for the convenience (they give me loaners without any problem). I've never had any real problems at this dealership and their coffee and bagels are usually pretty fresh.... |

You say you are a busy person and will pay for the convenience. How long does it take you to get into your vehicle drive to the dealer, get a loaner, then drive back to get your vehicle and last drive to wherever it is you were?
I will bet that I can change the oil in my driveway much faster than you can accomplish all of that driving and vehicle swapping. My dealer is 15 to 20 minutes away. I can have the oil changed in the time that it takes my to drive there and back, let alone the time I would spend waiting for them to change the oil.

My dealer is only five minutes away. Sometimes I need the loaner to run errands in the area instead of sitting around and waiting.
Trust me, this $75.00 oil change is really forcing me to re-think my present strategy... |

To each his own I guess. I pay $36 for a oil change plus inside-out wash while I sip coffee and use my laptop on their wireless network on a saturday morning. I can entertain myself or work and not have to deal with getting grimy, frozen, or supine under a car. And certainly not for that price.
Plus the implicit value of 30 minutes of my time (plus the effort it takes to dispose of the oil) is much higher than what I pay them for the oil change and wash. Now I can claim that I have the engineering skills to change engine oil but I can live without that accolade :)
Also, I don't use synthetic oil in the MDX because it does not require it. Dino oil works just fine in engines that don't require it. Using synthetic saps more money from my pocket but does little else for engine quality and performance. |

I haven't had an oil service yet in Seattle but I'll let you know when I do. So far service made a good impression on me.
They do have free wireless and the mall is across the street. I typically go in the weekends for an oil service anyway.
$75 for an oil change I definitely would never pay. Then again I think it's strange that the sales guy at the bellevue store claimed it was about $35... Maybe they have different ones. |
