| I just filed a report with the nhtsa concerning my transmission on the 2003, I am having problems with it, It seems to be shifting out of order, 1st to 3rd and then back to 2nd, I changed the fuild and it was dark brown, the dealer changed it about 15,000 miles ago, not sure if the transmission is a defect but i have decided that having someone atleast try and pull the records on replacements of 2003 is the way to go with this matter. |

How many miles on the car?
Did you buy it used or new? If used are you the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. owner?
Do you do any towing? |

| I am the second owner, I brought it used from a mother of 3, She decided that the truck was no longer needed and wanted to go with a car. I had the Inspection done on the vehicle and checked all of the service records from acura, The last thing done before the purchase was the transmission service, 15,000 miles ago. When the X started to shift more often I decided to change the fluid, It was dark brown in color so i did 2x change, I have been reading some of the post on here and decided to change it once more, This is a week later. Its as dark as the first time i Changed it. Most Tranmissions come with filters, Honda's due not, Most transmissions also don't have to use a special type of fluid, Honda's due. My decision to purchase this type of vehicle had a lot to due with the ratings and reliabilty of it. I just thought that the transmission issue was solved, I also own a 2001 honda accord that had been recalled due to this issue, I don't want to wait for me and my children to be going down the highway and the transmission just stops. |

| Sorry to hear about the problems you are having. According to CR, the 2004/up model years have a reported problem rate of less than 1%, the 2003 model year has a less than 3% rate, and the 2001/2002 model year problem rate exceeds 3%. Apparently there is a tranny filter - I believe Kiwi is an Acura tech: Link |

| If CR's statistics are right then given the time frame and years of the MDX's that would indicated to me that there is a problem. The transmissions where not build to last long, Someone posted a subject topic that stated "Are the X's made to self distruct at 100,000k, I am starting to wonder if they are. I just sold a volkswagon jetta that i purchased brand new in 1994, It had 208,000k on it, My reason for bring this up is that I spend a lot of time maintaining my vehicles and i alway try to take care of a problem before it happens if i can. If the statistics are right then I would assume that in Less than 2 more years the 03's will have a rating of above 3% like the 01's-02's. |

| One more thing, On the Link he has not found a filter for the 03's yet, The transmision on the 03's are not the same, As we know. I don't thing it has one. |

I don't think you can simply extrapolate like that. The 2001/2002's had problems starting in 2002, the problems were apparent in a year or two's time frame. The 2003 would have shown problems in 2004/2005 if it were following the same pattern. Second, the transmission was redesigned for 2003. I'm sure they did some tweaking in 2004 but there have not been a lot of post 2002 failures posted. Even a 2003 failure rate of less than 3% is better than a lot of the competition - especially US manufacturers. |

The third post down lists a part number:
"The 03-07 MDX has a cartridge filter #25450-P4V-013".
And the Kiwi confirms the dealership he works at will replace it. |
