Bad wheel bearing? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hello again!
I must say, this forum has saved me a ton of $$$ from the great members here!

As some of you may know, my X was involved in an accident a couple months ago. I have been working with the repair shop since, trying to get it back to "normal", even though most of the damage appeared to be cosmetic (aside from the rear suspension).

That being said, I was hearing a loud "thunking" sound from the right rear wheel area every time I would go over washboard bumps. I took it back in, and they determined it was a bad shock. They replaced it, yet the sound became much louder.

My brother (who is much more mechanically savvy than I) took a look by jacking that side up. He took a 2x4 and used it like a lever between the wheel and the ground, and pushed forward to see if there was any movement in the CV joint.

As I was looking as he was pushing the wheel, I noticed that there was movement in the metal joint where the rubber CV boot meets up with the wheel hub (it made a thunking noise as it moved when my bro pushed). There was probably about an 1/8th inch worth of play between these metal pieces. He seemed to think that this indicated that the wheel bearing was going bad, as the direction of movement was parallel to the wheel (forward/backward). We checked the other side, and there was no such movement in this area.

The repair shop noted my observation and took a look. They came back and said that the noise was caused by the fact that the new shock was not attached tightly, and that the wheel bearing/CV area was fine and that the movement was caused by the loose shock.

There is no more noise like I complained about, and there is no grinding noise that is typical of a bad bearing, yet I fear that the bearing is still going bad due to the movement... my brother insists that the movement is NOT supposed to happen. Should I be worried?

Thanks for any help!

Coincindently my 04 had the similar noice from the right rear wheel 3 weeks ago. Took to the dealer and they lift it up and re-torque the suspension and the nose was gone for now. Finger crossed.
