Driving on the interstate at about 65 mph.
Engine light comes on, I notice a very small change in engine noise.
I exit the interstate and pull to a stop. I turned off the motor and then restarted it. Engine ran fine, but when I tried to put it in gear, none of the gears would engage. I noticed a strong "burnt" smell, and immediately turned off the motor. I got out of the car and noticed a LARGE pool of tranny fluid under the car.
It looks like the fluid came out of the front drivers side of the engine/tranny. Maybe at the hose connections to the tranny cooler, or maybe the cooler itself.
Anybody have anything similar happen?
If I lost my fluid through a hose leak, will that damage the tranny? Total time from engine light on and when I came to a stop was about 30 seconds to a minute tops. |

This was my fear when I installed my own tranny cooler for my hitch.
I seem to remember both cooler connections being where you described. You probably have a ruptured hose at the connector. You don't mention a hitch with your accessories so I assume this is the plain-jane original cooler with no fins ? In other words nobody's fooled with it yet ?
Don't think I can give you a definitive answer on damage except that some people flush their tranny the same way this incident happened. The old fluid sometimes leaves faster than the new stuff enters. But they're not engaging the gears at all. I don't think you did damage.
Does anything register on the dipstick ? |

I installed the Acura tranny cooler upgrade myself about 4 years ago.
I didn't check the dipstick, but the puddle under the car was large. I think that's a good thing as it shows I had a lot of fluid in the tranny until I came to a stop.
It's in the shop now. I guess all I can do is cross my fingers. |

Well maybe one of the clips worked it's way off the flared part of the cooler tubing and ripped the hose. I don't know if you have the same clips I do but they're the type where you break off a tab for them to tighten. I can't remember the name.
Good luck. If nothing else, you should be able to write down a tranny fluid change. :) |

Not good news.
The service manager said that there was a ruptured hose, and that there was transmission damage. He's looking for a new tranny and is talking with Acura about helping with the repair costs.
I just had the torque converter and control module replaced 5K miles ago. Wouldn't they inspect hoses at that time?
I'll let the board know how things get resolved.
BTW, I kind of like the RDX loaner. |

Good news.
I get a new tranny by Tuesday, and Acura is picking up 100%.
