02 MDX - trans slipping at 61K - Click HERE for Original Thread

So - my 02 mdx with 61k now is slipping 2-3 and in reverse.
I will have it evaluated tomorrow morning at one of the san
jose area Acura dealers (good dealership though) and hope
that they will suggest that this become a goodwill case.

If you have been successful in getting your problematic 01/02
mdx tranny covered outside of warantee - please share what
ever proof points / ammunition you used to get them to take
care of it. It shoulds like they are standing by their products
in must cases - but I want to be prepared if this gets heated
and they don't want to take care of this. I just had a chat with
Acura NA and they were not volunteering any details (not that
I thought they would...). I just want whats fair and a tranny failing
at 61K in a $45k car that sees light use and product has bad
tranny history should not result in me spending another $6k
on this car to get it repaired!

Please share and wish me luck - I will bring 2 rabbits foots
tomorrow

In addition to the rabbit's feet, bring your service paperwork (if not done at an Acura dealer) documenting the proper fluid changes per Acura specs.

For engine sludge Toyota does not require proof of oil changes, Saab, Chrysler, and Mitsubishi do. Hopefully Honda is as "stand up" as Toyota. GLuck

ok - sitting in the dealer lounge typing this after dropping off my mdx to have them look at the trans. I could not get the trans to slip at all this morning or last night - I hope it screws up on the test drive. Had to pay $170 for 'diagnostics' . I am fearing that nothing will be found and I will be back on the road with a questionable trans. We'll see what magic they work and what they find. I would
like them to keep it for the week right about now as long as it comes back with a new or rebuilt trans....we'll see.....

Quick update to my 02 mdx transmission woes....

Took my MDX into the dealership a week ago last friday, they
drove it - found no issues, drove it again - no issues. Returned
to to me with instructions to keep eye out for reoccurances and
events leading up to it (car hot, cold, while on a hill,......while taking
a pill...while on a boat....while carrying a goat...sorry..). Said that
they didn't touch the transmission while in their care. I give them
major kudos for not charging me a cent in the end for the diagnostic
checkout. Funny thing is that they surely tweaked around with the
tranny - beacuse the car drives completely different - shifts differently - and worse of all- is slipping and jumping around in
gears alot more than before. Still not severe enough to trigger
the idiot dash light though...

My concern is if even I was to take it back and they could get it
to slip as I am seeing - would they and / or Acura North America
be willing to fix it even though it has not completely broken down
or at least coded in the computer?

Anyone know about this?

Thanks!

What dealer did you go to? Have you taken the vehicle there for all service work?

I doubt any "tweaking" went on with your transmission. It shifts different because it's an adaptive transmission that tailors shift points to suit the driving style of the operator. You may have heard this feature referred to with other marketing friendly names such as "performance algorythym" or "fuzzy logic."

If it's something you can feel and they claim they can't...you should take one of their techs with you on a road test and demonstrate it for them.

Our '02 is on it's 3rd transmission!@@##$@#@!... this car is clearly not intended for mountain/winter use. We live in the CA, bay area but maintain a home in the Sierras. Sadly after only 70K miles we are in the process of buying a new car. After numerious complaints to Acura HQ.. there proposal was to have us come in and try a new one.... I sensed the same rubbery.. cheapo front wheel drive feel. THIS IS NOT A CAR!!!! (I refuse to call it and SUV) INTENDED FOR ANYTHING MORE THAN CITY DRIVING. DO NOT BUY IF YOU DO ANYTHING MORE THAN 2 TRIPS TO THE SNOW!!!

We just got it back from repairs to the electical system.. All steering wheel controls and horn, etc. stopped working. After we got it back home we notices the auto-dim rear view mirror as delaminated!!!

Truly a very piss-poor example of consumer group engineering. If you like gadgets this is the car (and I mean car) for you. If you need something rugged enough for weekend driving to the snow DO NOT BUY THIS VEHICLE.

BTW... WE NEVER TOWED A DAMN THING WITH IT !!! 3 TRANSMISSIONS!!

forgot to add.. Acura is well aware of their huge goof on the earlier transmissions.... the dealers no this as well, they just don't admit it. The Pleasanton dealer just quietly took it in..gave us a loaner and called us when ready.. no questions., but you need to push.. After Acura told us there was nothing wrong with the car, I asked for a letter stating it was a safe vehicle for it's mileage.. they had pulled everything apart so they should know. The last thing I want is an "SUV" slipping in to neutral on a snow covered road!!

FOLKS IF YOU ARE SHOPPING.... STAY AWAY>>>unless you just want a POSER MACHINE.
