Hello,
Has anyone had problems with their power steering occasionally making a "grinding" noise (sound indicative of low fluid level in the pump) when the vehicle is idle? This started happening to me within the first month of owning my 2006 Acura MDX. The power steering fluid in the pump reservour was full each time that I checked into the issue over a six month period. With such a busy lifestyle and the problem only occasionally happening, I didn't get the vehicle into the dealer until just last week. Once there, it was reported that the fluid level was low. They were also very diligent in keeping the car overnight and checked for any leaks three separate times. None were found.
At three days past my service appointment, the fluid level shows that it is only 60% full. There have been no grinding sounds or fluid leaks that I can detect. WTF? The dealership that I went to is very reputable, so I doubt that a technician would have not added the correct amount of power steering fluid. Does the power steering fluid "settle" or reduce somewhat after filling appropriately? Any suggestions on what this is or how I can further investigate the problem?

I have had a similar problem with my 2003's power steering since nearly new. My power steering unit will give a bad grinding noise in certain circumstances. It usually happens after I stop to get gas, cut off the car for 5-10 minutes, then crank it back up. When it cranks back up after sitting these few minutes, the power steering grinds hard for the first several seconds.
I've always suspected that this will lead to failure in the pump, but so far it just seems to be slowly degrading. More specifically, the power steering has gotten harder and harder over the last 5 years, especially at low speeds.
I took the X to the dealer many times and they never could replicate the more extreme grinding I usually see. The only thing that was ever done was to drain and refill the power steering fluid.
I seem to remember reading a post years ago where someone said they had the same problem and it turned out that a certain number of power steering coolers were accidentally left outside and rusted. These coolers led to failure on a number of 2003 MDX power steering units. But I dont know if that was a local dealer or a regional distributor or otherwise.
Anyone have and information or suggestions for what I should do to fix or prevent total pump failure? |
