Just Installed Rear Back Up Sensors - Click HERE for Original Thread

It wasn't hard. Just a lot of steps. This was one of those acessories that we felt should have been on the car from the factory. I bought the sensors and attachment kit from Acura of Augusta (Georgia) for right around $400. Just take your time and with the pictures below you will see that you have to obviously cut 4 holes in the rear bumper. On the inside of the bumper, there is actually a guide that shows you how much you need to cut out, as it's imbossed in the molding of the bumper.

After the bumper if off with only 32 miles on her

Do you have any pics of the wiring process? What exactly had to be done?

Jeez, I'd love to be working my car on a nice warm night right about now.

The wiring process is completely plug-n-play and no splicing of any kind is involved. If you look at the second pic, follow the harness above the rear crash beam to the left of the body. Just below where that harness goes in is a plug. You need to remove that plug and the harness goes into the body from there. It even comes with a weather seal to properly seal that hole up. The wiring all takes place behind the left rear cargo panel. Sorry, I was too excited to take any pics of that, but once you get the panel off and read the directions that come with it, it is easy as pie to understand.

Please don't get mad at me but why would you need the back up sensors if the X comes with the backup camera?

Thanks

The camera isn't as clear as some I've seen. It's a very wide angle lense and gives you a false representation of how close you really are to something.

Nice job, Philth! I need to remove my bumpers to install the garnish and this helps a lot to see. I wish they have front sensors as well.

I noticed it's slightly offset to the right (at the bottom).
So not that easy to judge how wide the car is (love how audi shows the width of the car in the picture).

How do the sensor work? When you get nearer it will beep faster and the continuosly? I also wonder if you need to do any calibration.

PS Just noticed an huge 'orb' on the 4th picture (that big round light circle which is definitely not a flare since there's no light from that direction). Opinions vary and what they mean but they are rare...

No calibration needed. It will beep prgressively faster as you get closer. Once your too close, it will turn steady.

I'm only seeing a nice perfectly round circle in the 4th picture. Dirt would not be perfectly round and that bright white.
That said this is the MDX forum:-).

philth sent you a PM, thanks

One that caught the light so it is bright, there are about 6 other "orbs" around it.

I am not going to debate whether or not ghosts exist and whether or not they take the form of orbs, but that "orb" is CLEARLY a spec of dust or a water mark.

Mike
Luke
I don't care about a discussion about orbs either (nor an explanation).
But if the lens would be dirty, then that might be a good tip to clean it:-). The other possibility is light refraction and doesn't look that way. I'm fairly certain though you can't clean it looking at the perfect pattern. But I digress for sure...

I'll probably pass on the back-up sensors for now (and I'm not as good installing these myself).
I tried instead to see if I could figure out from camera what the width of the car is in the screen. Seems it's slightly offset but I think doable with the mirrors to figure this out.
crazymjb
I see about 6 orbs, while only one is really bright, if I look closely they all have the same "texture" to them.

Water marks FTW.

It's good to know some people still do their own work on their vehicles. I personally can't afford to take my truck to a shop so I learn everything myself. It doesn't hurt that my friends neighbor has a whole garage, well, in his garage.

Thanks for the comments guys. What really sucks is that my wife wants the wood grain steering wheel and though I'm sure it's easier than the sensors to replace, I'm fairly confident you must have a dealer only tool to reset the airbag indicator from disconnecting it to swap the steering wheel out.

In regards to removing the steeringwheel, after disconnecting the battery their should be a switch or connector you use to open the airbag circuit before removing it. (as the airbag can be triggered for something like 10 minutes after the battery is removed IIRC)

I'd imagine if you reconnect the battery after all is said and done the car wouldn't know the difference.

Worst comes to worst you drive it back to the dealer to have them reset it.

True. I'm sure it will say it in the instructions that come with it. If it is, I'll do the labor then drive it down to the dealer. Thanks for the tip. If anyone else has done this yet, please chime in.

Hello, I'm planning to install the back up sensors myself... as I was going through the instructions (http://www.handa-accessories.com/MDX/sensor.pdf), I don't quite understand the purpose of step 4 or what its cutting. Can anyone explain that to me?

I just wanted to make sure I can do everything myself before I buy the sensors.

Thanks!

I believe Warzau did it on a Gen1 and posted pics. Things may have changed on the 07.

You have to cut this little notch out of an extra piece of plastic where its not visible. Its so you can drill an even hole where the inner back up sensors go. I just used a dremel and eyed it since you cant even see this area once the bumper is installed.

Hey Philth

thanks for the reference to Acura of Augusta....just bought a set. Much cheaper than my local dealer by $150 !

Nope. If you don't turn the key on while it's disconnected (and why would you?) the SRS light will not come on.
