MDX plays DVD Data MP3/WMA - Click HERE for Original Thread

Maybe most people already know this but I found that the MDX has no problem playing a DVD data disk full of MP3/WMA.
That means you can put 4.5GB of mp3/wma on 1 disk!

It even played my DVD-RW disk. One thing I noticed though that it always sorts the folders and titles. So I wrote a small windows program to take a window media playlist and then rename and copy the files to a different location (rename songs and keep the order by adding prefix 001, 002, ...). You could also do it manually by renaming the titles this way.

You can use about any program to burn these (DVD ROM ISO format or Data format). If you don't have Nero or similar program you can probably use the windows XP file explorer by selecting all items and choose 'copy'. Then select the DVD burner drive.
Media player can also burn MP3/WMA CD's (by choosing 'Data CD') but never tried if it allows you to do DVD as well.

Can you help me out with this? I would love to be able to burn songs to a DVD but I haven't been able to figure out a way to do it. I tried the methods that you suggested with no luck. Windows Media Player would not burn to a DVD, nor would copying via Windows Explorer.

I couldn't get windows media player 9 to burn a data DVD but probably the newer version would work.

Vista appears to be supporting a data DVD:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Wi...ca31e81033.mspx

If the new media player works then this is the process:
You first create a playlist, then go to burn and select the playlist on the left. Then choose 'Data CD' on the right. Last select 'Start burn'.

Another solution is to use a regular DVD burn or backup program like Nero.
Create a new DVD-ROM (ISO) and simply drag-and drop the mp3/wma files you want.

I have Windows Media player versin 11. It still does not support a Data DVD. I found the NERO website. Which version of NERO are you using?

About any version should be able to create a DVD data disk...
You can download a trial version at the Nero web site.

It's a regular data disk and typically you get some free software with the DVD burner which will allow you to burn one.

thanks luke!

i downloaded the trial for Nero, and burned a DVD (8 cd's, for now)... popped it in the X, and voila!

my music files are in the native mp3 format, btw

I also used Nero. All of m music is already sorted into folders by Artist and Album. I also created an extra folder at the root of each disc just so the Main CD display showed the title for each CD as Music A - H, Music I-R, Music S - Z, etc. I also created one additional CD that just had playlists.

If you want to mix songs from different folders in a certain order, then you do lose the order unfortunately.
I wrote a small program to rename and prefix the songs with the order number (you select a playlist and destination folder first).
I don't have a share to put this on but you could always do this manually.

I have a mix of MP3/WMA. The MDX has no problem with it.
Neither has it a problem with other files on it like JPEG for the album.
So you could do a full copy of my 'documents\my music'.

Can you spell this out for me? I have burned 7 DVD+RW and they all work fine - EXCEPT that the CD "title" is always shown as the first mp3 on the CD. I am making a tree in NERO that looks like this:

DVD
......My DVD Title
.........................Coldplay
......................................X&Y
............................................01_Square One.mp3
.........................Ryan Adams

etc

Instead of showing "My DVD Title" as the DVD Title, it shows 01_Square One!

What am I doing wrong? Also - I can't get it to see playlists at all.
So - could you give a quick tutorial please. Thanks a lot.
Luke
I see the same: first song is the CD title....

Browsing through the folders of course you go through the directory structure as you outlined: push audio, select CD/DVD and push knob to go to folder display.

Seems a bug to me that it isn't using the volume label of the CD or DVD to display disk name... That is the industry standard (why else would CD/DVD's have volume labels).

Sorry. I forgot one minor step in the process. I created a MP3 file called as an example "Misc Vol A - H.mp3" that is one second long. I changed the Tag information as well just to be safe. In Nero make sure it shows up at the top of the folder list. It was not in my case for the a - H so I added a space to the front of the file name. If you need something create the short MP3 file do a google for a program called Audacity.

For the playlists I made sure the playlists were M3U extensions. I then created folders with the playlist names. Then I just dragged (drug?) the playlist from Windows Explorer directly into Nero. It automatically copied all of the songs associated to the playlists. Remember that there will not be anything dynamic about these playlists.

Let me know if you need more info and I will try to recreate the process in a little more detail.

Thanks Keith. I get the first bit (DVD naming) - but am flummoxed by the playlist bit. Sorry to be A-B-C here, but could you spell this out step-by-step...since I think i'm missing it completely.

Assume I have a playlist called my "songs.m3u" that references a bunch of files on my hard disk. Now what?

Thx.

I tried and drag and drop does work with CD audio compilation (but that's wav and not mp3/wma I assume).
However I can't get it to work with DVD ROM and there's no DVD audio compilation as far as I can tell.

I still will use my program that automatically copies all files from the wpl list to a new directory and prefixes track # to filename.

I used Nero EXpress so these instruction are based on using Nero Express:
A. In the double paned window, right click where it says "My Disc" and select "create folder".
B. Rename this whatever you called you playlist.
C. Drag the blahblah.m3u file from Windows Explorer on top of this new folder in Nero

This should copy all of the songs from the play list into this new folder.

Not sure if it makes a difference but all of my music is MP3.

I am actually on the road so I am kind of doing this from memory so I apolgise if I am missing any steps. I will be back on Friday and recreate the process if you need me to.

FYI: iTunes burns playlists directly to DVD (one click). Purchased songs will not play however.

Imagine yourself with 7.95 GB of songs in MP3/WMA format...

If the MDX's DVD drive works with DVD+R DL (double layer) discs then it means we can load 6 DVD double layers worth of 7.95 GB each.

7.95 GB x 6 = 47.7 GBs

That is enough music for a whole year of driving and then some.

So the question is...anyone tried to burn a double layer DVD and the DVD gets recognized by the MDX's DVD drive both the first and second layer?

Thanks

I do not have a dual layer burner (yet). However, I thought I read in one of the threads that someone was having issues with a DVD-A (5.1) disc because the 5.1 was on a second layer and the MDX could not read that layer..

I have a dual layer burner but didn't try it yet. It's cheaper to burn 2 single layer DVD's especially if you have 6-disc changer.

Hi Everyone,

I've been using DVDs full of MP3s for a few weeks now and its a great feature. I have a question:

1. I've only tried using a single layer rewritable disk, and the MDX dvd drive seems slow in general operation. When I first select a MP3 DVD, it takes a long time (15-20sec.) before I'm able to push in the main knob to access folders. Then the folder list also seems to load slowly. Anyone else have this issue? Maybe its the brand of DVD-RW I'm using. I think its TDK.

Thanks,
Serv

Mine too is slow when first loading the disc. I think the system is reading the file structure and the folder structure. I doubt it is the disc type.

I tend to agree, I have used a number of different disks, and all the ones with MP3s on them have been the slowest, probably because it needs to know what is on the disk before it can play it.

I've just started fooling around with this. Just got a 07 MDX tech/res.

Using nero express 7 for the first time, I burned about 160 mp3 files onto a DVD. I'm not sure exactly what I did but I think I inadvertently burned in the cd/dvd data setting. Anyway the DVD plays fine in the cd player (it also plays in the DVD of course). How is this possible? I am trying to understand what am I doing but I can't find any relevant info on the web. Everything I read on the web says that playing the DVD in the CD drive is not possible. The owners manual also says the same thing. I then tried to burn another batch using the DVD jukebox configuration on nero but that does not work. Will experiment some more and report back. Any info anyone can provide would be great.
Luke
The MDX comes with a 5 DVD changer (at least the tech package does). So burning a DVD data disk should work just fine. In Nero just choose data disk and add the mp3/wma you want to copy.
