I recently purchased the base Odyssey and glad I did. It was $14,000± less than a fully loaded Touring Ody. Added a dvd system and we were good to go.
Now I'm considering doing the same for the MDX, by buying the base model. The only gadget that is a must have is navigation. This is the issue I must research. If I can find a good navi for part time use on the dash, I think this 'base' option is a good idea. I just don't care for the additional cost of items that isn't important to me. It looks like the savings would be about $8,000. Other must haves are: towing package and running boards, but that would be the same whether I get the base or the tech/ent/sport. So, has anyone else come to the same conclusion?

Yes, I have. My wife and I have been looking and have decided that when we're ready to buy, the base is probably what we are going to get. I would love to have the navigation (and depending on prices when we buy) we probably won't get it unless they have what we want (color and all) on the lot and are willing to deal.
I miss the days when the NAVI in Acura was just a $2k addition to any vehicle. Now everything comes with a damn package... |

| My wife is trading her '01 Odyssey in on a '07 MDX w/ Tech pkg. We orginally were only looking at the base model, but trust me, once you test drive one with the Nav, you'll be sold on it! We had a connection with the Sales mngr too, so we got a good deal. We're excited and can't wait to pick it up. Good luck! |

OP, I assume you are in canada? In the U.S, the price difference is only around 2-3K depending on how open the dealer is to bargaining. Our dealer has offered 41K for the Tech (and 42.5K for the sport, only 500 over invoice and destination) equipped MDX, which is about 900 over invoice and destination, so low prices are available. The package price difference between sport and tech is usually 2100 but at my dealership they are offering sport for only 1500 more, so the web figures are far from set in stone.
If you shop around you should be able to get a pretty good deal as some dealerships have more of one model than another.
Of course it always comes down to personal finances, but if you really WANT the navi, than you should get it, even if it means waiting. Part of the reason we are waiting is because we want to be able to get the vehicle when it is comfortable for us, and the other car still runs fine for the time being. I have a portable system with a hardwire kit in my car, and my father the integrated navi in his TL, and Acura's navi is definitly worth it if you are willing to put yourself in a position to get it.
Whatever you decide, I hope you like your purchase. But get what you WANT. Just my .02

Thanks, live in Florida and yes as far as I can tell, Acura/Honda has the best navi out there. I've enjoyed it in my '03 MDX and a TL prior to that. The numbers you posted would likely sway me to the Tech MDX model. I haven't contacted any dealers for quotes, I assumed people were paying MSRP - I'll be sending out emails to internet salespeople to get my best price.

It's harder than you think going through email and the internet, especially if you have a trade. They all tell you that they can beat whatever number you get, or they tell you that you need to come in for a more aggressive number. It's possible, but a pain in the butt. One place might give you $500 over invoice, but then murder you on the trade, and another place, good money for the trade, but firmer on the price. It's not fun, but I wish you well. Good luck! |

We went through the same issue. After seeing both, we went with the Tech/Sport Pkg & we are VERY happy with our decision. IMHO it is worth the extra $$$.
There are quite a few nice options to the Tech Pkg, which goes beyong typical GPS systems. I have used both Tom-Tom & Garmin...the Acura system is much better. All the other bells & whistles are very cool. The back-up camera is a big plus. I really like the Sport seats, upgraded wheels, & the self-dampering shocks. I think the larger stablizer bars are a real plus too. |

Yeah, we were jerked around on the trade a bit. That said, we are looking at private sales now, AND the dealer who offered us the lower number for the trade gave us a copy of an auction list on the same vehicle, and surprisingly his number was more or less honest.
We are still going between two dealerships, one which is desperately trying to keep up, but we are going to try to hold them to their trade quote they gave us a couple months ago.

| My wife and I pulled the trigger last monday and got the base MDX and we love it. The tech pack would have been nice but the only cool thing I would have liked was the back-up camera. We would not use the navi much. This is our first MDX and it is awesome. We traded our 05 TL and boy I am glad we did. |

I traded in the wife's '01 Odyssey EX for a "base" MDX in November, and have zero regrets.
To call the vehicle "base" is almost laughable. It's got more features than any car I have ever owned.
Options and trim levels are all personal things. For me, I have zero use for a nav system. DVD? We have one kid who is now 15, so his personal DVD player works just fine. We had a DVD player in the Oddy and it was great when hauling Scouts (my son made Eagle at 14) on road trips, but those days are gone now.
For those of you interested in a DVD player, but resist the upcharge, I would strongly suggest having an after market system installed. You can get a nice system with a 9" screen installed for less than $800. That's what we did with the Oddy.
What would I like to have on my "base" MDX? I like the Sport rims and the perforated leather seats. I've got a TL, which replaced a CL Type-S, and I think the MDX can just about match it in performance. Since the vehicle is primarily the wife's, she couldn't care less about the suspension; it would be wasted on her.
I get to drive the MDX on the weekends, usually just to go fill it up! I love this thing though.
Now if I can just find a reasonably priced trailer hitch for my bike rack, I'll be happy.
All of that being said, the trim level upgrades are fairly reasonably priced for what you get.
Any way you go, an MDX is a great vehicle.

You can get very good portable navigation systems nowadays.
My neighbour has a Garmin GPS and works very well (much better than TomTom imho).
The only downside compared to a built-in system is data input (voice recognition works well in the MDX). Second the MDX navi will still work when you lose the GPS signal (since it will use other vehicle inputs to compensate). For instance in a garage...
I've used for years mapopolis on my pocket pc and I still think it beats the Acura MDX in terms of map detail and functionality.
But it's a pain to input any address in the vehicle (and it's not updated anymore but there are other alternatives like iguidance).
I wouldn't have bought the tech package just for the GPS. The backup camera and voice recognition are nice options. |

Draw-tite makes one now. I found it on eBay. It's part number 75520. I've attached the installation directions. I haven't purchased it yet. I am not willing to pay $600 to carry my bikes. I don't want to put the roof rails on due to potential wind noise. I learned that lesson my 01 MDX. |

Thanks mesalum, I followed your post on the other thread. I din't have the roof rack either. It's major pain when washing the car.
