I am in need of advice. I own a 2002 MDX that was driven 42,000 trouble free miles. At that mileage I started to feel a slight hesitation at all speeds..like a clogged fuel filter. I took it to my Acura Dealer and they immediately diagnosed the problem as a bad torque converter. I left the car for service and 3 days latter received a call delaying my pick up date because they decided to change the transmission in addition to the torque converter. After picking up the vehical, it drove excellent for the next 5000 miles and the same thing started to occur again. I took it back to the dealer (last week) and they immediately diagnosed the problem as a bad torque converter which they replaced again. While driving home from the dealer the X seemed fine for about 10 miles, then I noticed a "clunk" as the transmission was shilfting into a lower gear. In addition, I started to notice the hesitation problem once again AND in addition to that the X now displays almost a stop and go action at speeds between 5 and 10 mph. You can see an up and down movement of about 100 to 200 rpm of the tach while holding a steady foot on the accelaerator.

The dealer has been very curtious and very willing to accommodate me with free loaners etc during all these issues.

So, I now have had 2 transmissions and 3 torque converters in the vehical. I might add that the truck has been babied since it's birth and has neverd towed anything. It has been serviced to Acura's recommandations. The X now has a total of 52,000 miles. I would like to keep it untill about 80,000.

Any suggestions as to how to proceed at this point will be most appricated.

Multiple transmission replacements are not all that uncommon in the 2001/2002 model years. If you need to keep it, then I'd bring it back to the dealer and tell them you don't want it back until it is really fixed. I'd also ask for an equivalent loaner. Unfortunately, the real fix is the redesigned transmission in the 2003/up model years and the rebuilt 2002 transmissions do not seem to be all that much better. So even if they straighten out your transmission issues now it does not mean you will not have issues again before 80K. If you CAN trade it once the tranny is fixed, I'd push the dealer for a great deal to make up for your inconvience. Good Luck with it.

Ask the dealer for a free extended warranty, or trade it in, since you have no guaranty on how the trans. will hold up.

Thanks Jim and JL,

I will be speaking to the dealer in the morning and you have given me some ideas for the conversation.

Thanks again,

Rob

Just a follow up to my original post. The dealer asked me to allow them to change the EGR valve before changing the transmission. I told to them to give it a try while I waited and 45 minutes later I was given the X to take for a test drive. I was amazed. The problem was gone!

I wonder if it was the ERR valve all along!
