Frozen Gas Tank Cover - Click HERE for Original Thread

Took my 07 MDX in for service for a rattle and asked them to check out the gas tank. Told them it froze shut on me the other night and we had to use a blow dryer to warm it up to open. Of course dealer told me it is quite cold out...blah blah blah. I have never ever had a car do this. Well, Acura rep was at dealer that day (luckily) and said this is a major problem. Guess in Canada they are experiencing it more as it has been much colder than it has been in New England. Rep took pictures and my VIN and am supposed to hear back on what the remediation plan is. My gas tank cover is also one that sticks out a little so not sure if that is part of the problem.

I had the same problem the other day. Went to fill-er up and the cover was frozen. After a swift hit, it opened. Attendant put the gas cap in the holder on the cover. Wouldn't you know it, the top of the cover now sticks out when it never did before. A bummer since I cant yell at a gas attendant for an obvious production flaw.

What is an attendant? My 04 froze up a couple weeks ago and the release lever would not engage the tab. After several bangs it popped open. No further episodes. I guess the lock is a feel good measure but pretty useless against a screwdriver.

Here is a fix:

Spray some WD40 on it. That will prevent from freezing.

I sprayed mine and never had another problem with it since....

Hey all,

My buddy who designs the '07 Gas tank cover states there is a manufacturer flaw. After they have a new design there will probably be a recall to replace the frozen gas tank door.

The issue is with water collecting in the housing unit and then freezing to the door arm. If you want to stop it now drill a small hole to allow the water out.

Thanks!

you guys know that there is also a manual release in case this happens right? It is located with all the fuses and stuff in the back of the X. It is a small little pull handle. It also states it n the car manual.

Yes but the manual release pulls the pin in the event that the primary cable /electronics fail. If indeed water is freezing the swing arm shut the manual release won't help. It is good to know about the manual release though, most probably don't know.
