I am still waiting for my dealer to send word on the ETA of my X that I have on order along with BSM and Sport RB's as dealer add-ons. In the meantime, I was curious to learn if the BSM's are really worth it. Are they just for looks or do they really prevent parking lot dings?

The reason I ask is that the way they are installed by the dealerships looks too low IMO to be of any use but cosmetic.

Can some of you folks that have BSM's installed chime in? Have any of you tried installing them slightly higher up?

Depending on the response, I might cancel that add-on or try having them installed slightly higher, if the dealer's techs go for it.

TIA,
KS

I installed the wide body side moldings 3 incher higher on my 2004 than what the provided template was marked. No discernable difference in looks and I have not had a ding since. Had one major door ding before. Easy job to do yourself. Tim will give you good price.

Well I can vouch that the BSM really work. My wife and I went out for dinner on Valentines and the parking was really packed so I could not get my usual far away by myself parking.

So I had to park at a tight fit, and needless to say the next day I saw I had a scratch right on the molding that took off the paint. I just touched it up with some paint. Alot better then having a door ding for sure.

G: Thanks for your inputs. I think only one style of BSM is offered currently on the 07 X, so I am going to go with it.

VietDude: Thanks for the update, that makes me feel much better!

The side moldings on our 2003 saved us a few times - I'd recommend them. Acura doesn't want to ruin the looks of the design with side moldings, but how good does it look after a year and 5 or 6 door dings? I've seen plenty of multiple dinged MDXs and they don't look so good, never mind commanding a lower value when you sell or trade.

I just ordered the BSM's and plan to install them myself. I plan to tape them on to observe and find the ideal height for door protection. My question is...if I don't like the position, can they be removed without damaging the paint?

Yes, but they most likely cannot be reapplied. The BSMs were replaced twice on my 2003.

If they are removed you can reinstall. At least you can if they are like other moldings with which I have had experience. It takes time to clean the residual off both the vehicle and the moldings.

Once this is accomplished you can use double sided sticky tape designed specifically for things like moldings. This can be purchased in various sizes at most automotive supply stores. This replacement tape does not last as well as the original eqipment stickly substance.

I had a different experience with my '05. I didn't like the initial positioning, and had to use the "string saw" method to cut through the tape to remove them. I wound up damaging the BSM, and had to buy a new set.
