Hi, I have a 02 mdx with about 75 xxxmiles
i have a check engine light on with fault codes
p0300/p0301/p0304 - cylinder 1 and cylinder 4 misfire
i have checked/replaced the plugs and cleared the fault. after
short roadtest, light came back
any suggestions??

Egr valve is one possibility. Believe it is still a warranty item until
80 K or so.

My 01 with 90,000 did the same thing and brought it in twice now after replacing the plugs and both times the code said cyclinder misfire due to the MDX needing a valve adjustment. $300
Haven`t done it yet deciding if I am going to keep the 01 a do the valve adj. with timing belt and water pump etc at 100 grand. They said I needed a new front motor mont as well $300

i dont hear any excessive valvetrain noise. the engine is quiet at idle
if egr was at fault, would it set a egr fault?

Hade the same problem in my 02. EGR valve was replaced under warranty. As someone already said they are under extended warranty through 80k mi.

The two warning lights mentioned also came on when they had to replace my EGR valve (@ 42 K miles on my 2002 MDX). I do not know what the scan codes were when it was diagnosed. I do know the engine appeared to have a slight miss type sensation at certain speeds which was caused by the malfunctioning EGR valve.

Funny thing - the same 2 indicators came on for my '03 MDX with ~57K miles on Sunday 3/4/7. I have yet to have it diagnosed. I will get back to you with what I encounter.

For those where the warranty covered, did the warranty cover the diagnosis costs, labor & parts costs?

Yes.

Went to the local Autozone and they checked the code free of charge. The code was a P0134 for a Oxygen Sensor (Bank1, Sensor1). I also read some other threads and wonder whether it has anything to do with the ethanol content.

Hi:

2002 MDX 71xxx miles
I have had the CE plus VTM light on for a while. MDX was idiling rough, dying after a cold start, etc.

Took it to my dealer on Monday. I turned out needing a valve adjustment to the tune of $630. I was hoping it was the EGR valve!!

Anyway so far, so good, it has not come on again.
cloud1314
well i took my car to the dealer, and the tech said to fix my cel
i would need to do a valve adjustment. would a valve adjustment
cause a misfire? i see you guys are being recommended the same
solution. have anyone seen/heard that mdx needs valve adjustment

Replaced my Oxygen Sensor and hoped that it was the truly the only issue. The codes were reset and the lights remained off. Took things into my own hands since I no longer have warranty coverage. I posted some photos on a new thread ...
should the O2 Sensor be covered by Acura?

Hey, just an update
the fix for my check engine light was a egr valve.
dealer misdiagnosed. how i came to that conclusion was i
cleared the fault, unplugged to egr. drove for 2 days and the only
fault that i got was p1491-which was for egr-no misifres.
so i replaced the egr valve/gasket. everything works good now.

Hello everyone!

I'm new to this forum but came across this thread because I am having the exact same problem with the Engine light and the VTM-4 light coming on in my '02 MDX with 92K miles. I purchased an EGR valve and I want to replace the potentially defective valve to see if that will solve my problem. Does anyone have a good schematic and method to get at that valve? From other references it seems like it might be relatively easy to get at, but I'd rather not guess if I don't have to. Thanks in advance for any guidance that anyone can provide.

My wife has an 2002 with the Engine light and the VTM-4 light showing and around 51,000 on the clock.

A Tech friend said it should be covered under warranty, but advised the Techs at ACURA are on COMMISSION and may receive more $$$ when they declare it consumer fix and not ACURA.

I bought this thing based on their reputation...I guess I did not look at the real deal and only bought the Acura spin?

Any Idea's?

Just a quick update for me. I ended up not having much difficulty changing the valve; all I had to do was unscrew a couple of the trim covers as someone posted earlier. The good news is that the VTM-4 light went away. The bad news is that Check Engine light is still on. I guess I'll have to take it in to have it looked at.

daneaux,
I recommend you call the Acura customer care hot line. They'll check your VIN number and verify whether you are eligilble for the warranty service. This way you'll have some ammunition in the event a dealer tries to pull something funny. If extended warranty applies, it is 8 yrs. 80,000 miles as others have stated.

Good Luck!

Bliang,

You may have to reset the OMD computer in order for the check engine light to disable. That's what I had to do after replacing the Oxygen Sensor.

Good Luck!
Bliang
Jupiter,
thank you so much for the response. Please forgive my ignorance, but can you tell me what the OMD computer is and if there is a way for the average user to reset it? I don't have a fault code reader or any special electronic interface.

Thanks Again!

Thanks Bliang ! I will call customer care tomorrow AM before I take it in this week.

Bliang,

Doh! My Bad ... OMD is an old music group/band.

OBD is what I meant to write for On-board Diagnostics computer. This is usually accessed via a special connector under the steering wheel and to the right a bit. Places like AutoZone will read the codes but will not reset them. Only dealers and auto mechanics will reset the OBD computer. Unfortunately, you need a good friend or one that is an auto mechanic with the appropriate device and software to reset these OBD computers. I just happen to have a sibling that is a mechanic.

Good Luck.
