My tranny went out at 125k and man was it costly!!!

It happened during a trip to tahoe and I had to drive back at 50mph!

After reading all the threads I thought I had a chance to get the dealer to take care of the bill or at least half but at 125k I couldnt get anything!

I called corporate and they said that I am out of warranty and that they already took care of the recall back then when they installed the oil jets or whatever. She wasnt very nice and the service guy at the dealer said that it was an extension to the warranty and didnt apply to my car. Then he even said we only sell cars here the manufacture takes care of all that. That didnt sound very professional but anyway I left the car there.

I figured there was no other choice since the dealer said they was going to change the tranny with a 3 year unlimited mile warranty.

They wont work on it for about another week or 2 but I said that I couldnt drive it home anyway so they gave me a 07 mdx with everything! Pretty fun to drive!

So did I do the right thing or did I have a chance with the dealer taking care of part of the bill? 2001 Mdx with 125k replacing tranny for $3900 not including tax with 3 year unlimited miles.

..you already did it so feel good about it. Face it, what could you sell it for with a dead tranny? when you get it back you will have a new tranny with 3 year, UNLIMITED, warranty. Just make sure the warranty is transferrable should you decide to sell it. I think you did good, all considering. If you had tried to trade it in they would have probably charged you for taking off your hands. Enjoy the '07 loaner, remembering that if you buy it it will cost you $45K. You paid $3900. Use the money you saved and take a trip to Europe!

As Rotorray correctly pointed out, you already spent the money, so no use crying over spilled milk.

I went to Kelly Blue book:

http://www.kbb.com/KBB/UsedCars/Pri...uizConditions=0

The value of your car is now about $7,500. Without a working transmission, even less.

But it is a shame to put half the value of a car into a repair.

Yeah I know I cant do anything about it but to hear responses from you guys. I really had no choice but to take the hit because I figured if I bought the tranny elsewhere I would only be saving a $1k at the most without warranty as with the dealer.

After driving my 01 without any prior problems I was surprised to see how many people have problems with these acuras! You guys might be mad from hearing this but after Im done with this mdx Im not going to buy another acura EVER! Seems that mdx, tl's, cl's are all having the same tranny problems and I just dont think its worth it. I love the third row best of all but Im done! Perhaps a new tundra or the lexus gx470.

Thanks for the responses and Jeff where did you get the value of $7500 for my mdx? Is that with a bad tranny? I know I can get at least $10k for it with a good tranny or even a bad tranny but $7500? Thats ridiculous! (no offense)

Btw the 07 drives alright and fun to play with but some of the features that I dislike were how they only had auto power windows for the two front and not all of them like the all lexus automobiles! The navigation responses were too annoying with bad pronunciations! Its missing the ventilated cooled seats feature and a better stereo system! Also voice activated navi sucks because they never get anything right except for banking.

Thats my 2cents!:D

Did you feel this way before having to cover the cost of the new tranny?

I cannot imagine any dealer or manufacturer putting any money into a vehicle that showed 125,000 on the odometer. I would never have even thought of asking.

You forget - because Honda/Acura generally make more reliable products, they are often held to higher expectations (unfairly). When GM trannies fail at less than 100K, the owners then buy Hondas/Toyotas because they have the reputation/history of lasting longer. When a Honda/Toyota tranny fails at less than 100K, a class action suit is started, because owners feel that they are entitled to that reputation/history of longevity.

Just personal opinion, but if I had a vehicle for about 7 yrs and put 125k mi with no problems, I would not hesitate to buy that vehicle again. I would say you have had a more than satisfactory experience with your X.

I have forgotten nothing. My comment still stands.

I think you took that too literally. I agree with your comment but there are many that feel they bought a Honda for reliabilty and are upset when their tranny only lasts a 125K. When in reality, parts last as long as they last, and there is no guaranty that anything will last beyond the warranty.

Not for nothing....GM trannies are a dime a dozen and they are relatively cheap for about maybe $750-$1000. Acura trannies are $4000. Big comparison.

I agree Acura et al is held to a higher standard, but you pay for it too - ie - domestic equivalents tend to be less expensive.

Oh yeah - Acura dealer near me in Mass is quoting $5,200 for a new tranny!!

Price doesn't guaranty reliability. A lot of people will pay even more for a BMW/Merc/etc even though their reliabiilty is worse than a lot of domestics.
