Between Love Canal, Three Mile Island, and mutual assure destruction, the 70's was a scary time. I always figured that the world would be toast before I finished Jr High. Your account and photos gives a ghostly recall to a dark period.
I work for a company that specializes in mega cleanup projects for the government. The granddaddy of them all, the Hanford Nuclear Reservation near Richland WA. Hanford makes Love Canal look like a pimple on a flea's butt. You can bet that the government does everything they can to mitigate public concern regarding the plumes of radiological nasties that are moving toward the Columbia River. The fact that you were so close to Love Canal and yet have such little recall of the cleanup effort is not an accident. Jimmy C and Ronald R wanted it that way. |
