| All right, I gotta ask. For those who seriously like Sanjaya...what's the attraction? Or is it just the interest of seeinging how far lack of talent can go? Or, is he really talented, and I'm just missin it?  :4: |

The guy is only there because of Howard Stern and the campaign to bring down the show as can be seen in www.votefortheworst.com
He has no talent, at least not enough to be there still. Everyone who got eliminated in the past 4-5 weeks were by far better than him. |

Holy smokes
I had no idea that was going on.
I really thought he was still in because of a large immigrant fan base(no offense to anyone).
I don't think I like the Stern approach. As funny as it seems at first, if that is really impacting the vote (and there's no telling if it really is or not), it seems to be ripping the poor kid at no fault of his own. |

It is cruel to Sanjaya because he is being made fun of in a way. I read somewhere that they estimate that he is getting upto 5 million votes a week from these jokers who are voting multiple times.
Anyway, I always thought public should not be voting for who deserves to stay and who goes. Most people don't have the ear to be a good enough judge. We don't have public deciding on who becomes Miss USA, so why the heck are we deciding on who sings the best? If you ask me, beauty is easier to judge by average Joe out there than ability to sing is.:3: |

Because it is about making money, not finding the best singer. You are more likely to watch every week if you are allowed to participate, and that translates into more advertising $. A "scandal" just pulls in more viewers and $. |

But that same scandal could kill the goose that lays golden eggs! Simon has already said that if Sanjaya wins, he may very well not ever do the Idol in the US again. He is wealthy enough to do that and without him, the show wouldn't be the same. Most people have a love hate relationship with him on this show and the show would lose a lot of interest if he decides to opt out of doing the Idol in the US again. |

America has a short memory - everyone is replaceable. All they do is pick someone else antagonistic and play up the "will they be as bad as Simon" angle, and everyone tunes in to see. Then everyone forgets that Simon exisited. Part of the problem is also that AI is so popular that someone like Stern, who is largely irrelevent these days, is trying to gain some publicity by attacking it. |

Why do people vote for Sanjaya? Your guess is as good as mine. He should have been sent packing a long time ago. But as JL_SS said, the show's main goal is to attract viewers, sell advertising, and make money. If it were truly a talent search for the best singer, then Melinda would have it sewn up — though the 17-year-old Jordin is also impressive and could win it all.
Sanjaya's performances and survival each week defy expectations, confound the judges, and make for amusing conversation, blog fodder, and media attention. Frustrated viewers are calling for changes to the show's voting system, and though Simon Cowell has threatened to quit, he's not going anywhere because Sanjaya isn't going to win, even if he makes it into the top five. His fate will not be determined by the self-professed "King of all Media" or the "Vote for the Worst" campaign, neither of whom wields nearly as much influence as they'd like to think. In the end, one of the talented women will be crowned this year's American Idol.
Still, it's hard not to feel sorry for Sanjaya. As one blogger put it, "He's a young kid thrown in the deep end of the pool, and sometimes he looks like he's drowning in front of 33 million viewers." While he's supported by his loyal "fanjayas," the judges excoriate him, comedians mock him, and others blame him for compromising the show's credibility. I give him high marks for keeping it together in the face of blistering criticism and some incredibly racist and hateful rants. I think people should lighten up and give this teenager a break. After all, it's just entertainment. Right? |

| I have just started watching AI since the past few weeks and mainly because of all this Sanjaya talk in the media and among friends circle. My first impression of him was that he must be doing something right. Last week I realized that he is a very smart kid who knows how to get the votes...singing in spanish. He leaves the show with people wondering whats hes gonna do next. Pretty smart or well coached? You don't really need to be gifted to succeed in the show biz. Take JLo for instance. She can neither act nor sing. If people can make money out of Sanjaya then hey will make him look like the most talented guy in the world. |

I concur. This is the first year we're wathcing AI and enjoying picking our "favorites" as a family. My 7 yr-old sees picking our favorites as a competition in itself. She picked Jordin weeks ago and I picked Melinda. My wife likes Phil only because of his backstory of being a new dad. I'd like to see Phil and Jordin in the finale. Melinda is definitely the most polished because she was a professional singer. For that reason, I'd like to see either Jordin or Phil win it.
Lakisha just sounds angry when she sings. I liked her early on but not so much now. |

LOL - I haven't been on this forum in a while - nice to see the MDX'ers are AI fans. I only watch it because my daughter makes me:rolleyes:
I'm not sure it matters who drops out at this point, because nobody that's left can beat Jordin. She's amazing.
But if I had to pick, I'd say LaQuicha needs to go home, and Blake needs to pick it up next week or he's in big trouble (if he makes it to next week). |

Must have something to do with age. My 8 year old daughter is crazy about Jordin also. I like Melinda to win it all with Phil as the finalist for men. I concur with your opinion on LaKisha as well.

I think that Blake and Chris are wasting space there. Jordin is great but not quite as 'developed' as Melinda.

My daughter is 16 and while she likes Melinda I think she's leaning towards Jordin all of a sudden. She and her friends refer to Melinda as Shreck. Jordin as the Linebacker. The linebacker probably sprung up from the fact that she is the daughter of former NY Giants corner back Phillippi Sparks for those that don't know.
Say what you will about that show but the one thing it does is bring families together. Yes, in front of the TV may not be the best. But in this everybody's busy society we live in it sure is nice to have this time together. Especially with a 16 year old. Reminds me of sitting around with my grandparents watching Ed Sullivan or Laugh-In or All In The Family. We just don't do these things anymore. |

Just a few weeks ago it looked like Phil would be kicked to the curb before Sanjaya. But on country music night, Phil's vocals on Keith Urban's "Where the Blacktop Ends" were amazing while Sanjaya butchered Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About" and bit the dust—giving everybody something good to talk about! Phil followed up with another outstanding vocal on inspirational music night by singing Garth Brook's "The Change."
Though Melinda and Jordin are still the ones to beat, IMHO, Phil's recent performances and greater confidence have infused more life into the show. Right now the biggest disappointment has got to be LaKisha. Her recent song choices and ho-hum performances are a far cry from her jaw-dropping rendition of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." |

Phil is the best male contestant left. he's got a great voice, just has to sing the appropriate genre. LaKisha has a great voice but screams too much. She is no way as versatile as Melinda or Jordin, both of whom deserve to win.

| Looks like it is bye bye Jordin. She picked the wrong song. She is not a rock'n roller so she shouldn't have tried a difficult song to sing. Instead she should have gone for a ballad. Too bad because I think she is almost as good as Melinda. Oh well, she is only 17. |

I think Chris and Lakisha are gone tonight. Blake will go next week, Phil next leaving Jordin and Melinda in the final.
I would like to see Jordin and Phil in the final. Both have improved tremendously and either one winning would personify what it means to be an American Idol - young unknowns with no formal training/experience following a dream. |

I agree with your assessment but going solely by pure talent, top three in order would be:
1. Melinda
2. Jordin
3. Phil

Oh yes! I'm actually in what I would call the best employment situation I've had in a long time. Working as a Labor Relations Consultant for a multi-state health care provider organization. They treat me very well, and I respond in kind by doing the very best I can for them. Thanks for asking. :4: |

At first, I thought the same thing. She picked the wrong song, lost control, and turned in a remarkably poor performance.
But then I remembered that nobody was eliminated after the Idol Gives Back charity show, that votes from both weeks would be tallied, and that two contestants would get the boot. Jordin did so well the previous week—to say nothing of her soaring popularity and fan base—I figured she would be safe. Blake delivered an original and truly electrifying rendition of "You Give Love a Bad Name," and LaKisha found new life with "This Ain't a Love Song." So sweet was her performance that Simon gave Kiki her props and kissed her right on the lips! And Melinda did what Melinda does week after week: she turned in another fine performance, even though rock music is not her genre.
All told, I think America got it right. My money is still on a Melinda-Jordin showdown. |

| My feeling is that there is Melinda, and then there is everyone else competing for runner up. IMO, she is in a different league. |
|

| drjay |
Tuesday's show was a disaster, IMHO. Poorly produced, terribly paced, and bad performances all around. Still, people cast more than 45 million votes for their favorite singers.
The results: not surprising. Everyone knew that Melinda and Jordin would be safe; each delivered one good performance and one mediocre performance. As Simon predicted, LaKisha and Blake were "vulnerable." While people may agree with Randy that Blake's beat boxing "has gotten old," they weren't ready to eliminate the only guy left in the competition—despite two really awful performances. Whatever the reason, it was LaKisha who was sent packing and, ironically, "Stayin' Alive" proved to be her swan song.
Though I’m still expecting (or at least hoping for) a Melinda-Jordin showdown, it's possible that Blake could be a spoiler if he steps it up next week. |

It was disappointing to see the best singer eliminated last night. But someone as talented, versatile and consistent as Melinda is destined to have a fantastic career. And, true to form, she was gracious in defeat.
At the same time, I wasn't shocked by the results, which reflect the preferences of a very young demographic, not the American public generally. That Blake proved to be a spoiler wasn't totally unexpected, given his appeal to young viewers and the loyalty and intense text-messaging ways of the "Blaker Girls."
So it's Jordin vs. Blake in the finale. I hope Jordin is crowned the next American Idol. But, sadly, it's possible that the Blaker Girls and other teeny-boppers could pull off another upset. |
