so this might be a dumb as a door knob questions but how do u fold down the 2nd row seats to access the third row seats...i can fold the back part, but then nothing...does the second row fold down or something, or do u have to climb over them everytime u wanna have someone sit in the 3rd row?

MMM..., I can see you are the first time MDX owner. It has been the same way since 2001. You can only access the 3rd row from the passenger side rear door. on the side(not top, that one fold down the back only) of the second row right seat(the single-seat one), there is a lever that you can pull up, once you pull the lever the back folds forward and you can slide the seat towards the front and gain access to the 3rd row. It's not an easy access, you have to be nimble to maneuver yourself into the tight access. Sometimes I just ask my kids to flip into 3rd row from the trunk.:D

That works well for us too!:D

yup i'm a first time owner...but that kinda sucks ass though...$50K and they couldn't figure out a better way to access the third row...sad

Actually that works just fine for me. My 16, and 17 year old kids (guys) sit back there on long trips, and rarely complain. That is probable the simplest approach I can think of to access the 3rd row seats, except for like voice activated folding :roadtrip:

I kind of agree with you, but I guess these seats are really for 'small individual' or kids, they probably might not have much of problem getting into the tight space. I've tested larger SUVs, alot of their 3rd row access are actually worse than the X. I'm sure the driving experience should make up for the minor imperfection. The driver seat is all soooooo comfy.:2:, I tend to forget about 2nd row or 3rd.:)

You get a wider walk through when the seat tumbles out of the way, as in the new GM crossovers and the Ford Freestyle. (Also maybe in Mercedes GL and R, can't remember offhand.) But those systems don't work if there's a child seat in the second row.

Hyundai and Mazda use a system like Acura's in their new three-row crossovers. This system does work with a child seat in the second row. They provide a bit better access, but not as good as the GM and Ford.

If you want to truly experience tight access, check out the new X5.

You don't understand the design-
The access is so restricted so that a large person doesn't try to sit in the back! It's like an amusement park ride, where you have to be a minimum height to ride. In the MDX, if you can't get in, you can't ride.

It prevents embarrassing moments like I had recently. Since I've never seen what the third row seat looks like after three MDX's, I decided to set it up and sit in it. My wife stopped just short of calling for the Jaws of Life to get me out.

LOL! It's good your wife still cares enough about you to extricate you. You must not have good life insurance. :2:

I agree with Fab... We folded ours down the day we picked the X up and it has not been raised up again. If there was a model without the 3rd row we would have bought it.

No kids as well.... :D

Hm, no kids yet your name is "mia's dad"?

I'm guessing either Mia lives with her mom or Mia is the MDX.

Many members have named their X here. Can't seem to find the old thread...

My kids call the 01 Blackie since it's NBP. They want to name the 07 Zack for some reason (it's Formal Black). We have to find a name soon - it gets confusing when we're getting ready to go out. I just hit the garage door opener for the one we're going to drive so that the kids know which one we're taking. Decisions, decisions :D

We call our MDX Edy.

Once in a while I have out-of-town visitors whom I give a tour of Washington, DC area. This is when the 3rd row comes in handy. There was a time when there were 9 of us inside the MDX (2 in front, 4 in 2nd row, and 3 in 3rd row). It may not be comfortable but it is better than having a 2 or 3 car convoy inside the city with limited/expensive parking space. Most of the times the 3rd row is folded flat for maximum cargo space.
