Ticking Noise Related to Vehicle Speed... - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hello,

I have a 2006 MDX (with Touring Package) and have been hearing what I would call an "inconsistent ticking" noise for months now. It is rather faint and almost sounds the same as the click one would hear when the automatic headlights go on (which it is not). The noise seems to be located near the driver's door or dashboard. It only occurs when I am at speeds of 80 MPH or more and slightly worse when there are noticeable crosswinds to the traveled roadway. I almost wonder if there is something in the air conditioning ductwork, like a vent door rattling close to the outside exchange? Yes, I have read another post describing a similar noise and it is not that.

My troubleshooting has been exhaustive at times, without any conclusions. I don't feel that I can report this to a technician, because it is so inconsistent and I couldn't expect them to test drive the car at illegal speeds. In the grand scheme of things, this issue is also pretty insignificant. Turning on any volume level of music masks this noise completely. It is just when you want some quiet driving time to think, such a noise can drive you bonkers!

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

no offense but driving 80+ mph to think...I don't think this is such a good idea. May be you should leave the ticking sound alone to remind you that you are driving faster that you would like :D

Alphaforcex,

No offense taken...

Come to Arizona sometime and drive on the straight and boring freeways through the desert. The legal speed limit is 75 MPH and the last study that I read of the average driver's freeway speed was 78 MPH in this State. In reality, blue haired old ladies in Cadillacs pass you if you drive anything below 80 MPH.

So, this speed is not as fast as a Virginian, like yourself, may think. Especially in a high tech vehicle dedicated to safety and performance like an MDX.

Do you have your carkey on a keychain? I wonder if it's just the keychain clicking against the dash or interior at speed?

DJ-MDX2,

Believe me, I actually took out anything in the car that was loose and/or could make noise before a test drive once. The problem was still present. If it did not require me to drive the car at freeway speeds, I could at least bend down and try to isolate where the noise was coming from.
