The grey plastic on front and rear - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi there

My wife plans on getting one in a month or so and we both love the overall looks (most of it) but don't appreciate Acura not painting the grey plastic the same as the body color and am seriously thinking of having it painted to match.

Some body colors look a bit better with it then others and on some it even clashes  with it.

I think they could of done a better job in sculpture department too, especially on the front one.

Just wondering if anyone else feels the same way?

AMEN BROTHER! I'm Glad someone said it! I think I would have bought the silver if the black trim didn't stick out like a sour thumb! Problem is that the factory paint job is usually the best one especially on plastic parts! Choose one that blends the best probably the Black or Blue?

YES, the black does not look too bad but color choice brings up another complaint!

Their color selection blows, for me anyway. While dark colors look nice, in the long run (we keep our vehicles a LONG time) a lighter color is the way to go and the choices they have are pretty lame.

I always pick a vehicle color that will hide dirt/minor scratches the best and the silver is a very good choice for that but on the MDX, silver just doesn't't do much for us.

We (wife & I) might go with the Aberdeen green, the darker Grey or that desert color.

I have not seen the green or desert at the lots yet so the colors may look a bit different then just pictures of them.

BLACK is OUT, never again will we own a black car unless we are so rich that we can afford to only bring it out on nice days and that will never happen.

What color do you have?
Mia's Dad
Nimbus Grey is the dark grey color and the plastic trim does not bother me on this color. My wife wanted silver and the black trim just drove me nuts. To each there own I guess, but we had to go with a darker color and one of the reasons was that trim.

Steel Blue! If you take a close look the plastic is a lighter grey instead of black like on some of the others. The Blue almost looks grey from some angles and the Nimbus Grey sometimes looks green from some angles?

I was bothered by the differences in the light and dark gray on the fr & rr bumbers as well. Solution I plan on ordering the dark gray skid face for the front and rear as found on the darker mdx's since I ordered silver.

Total cost is around $100 w/shipping

71103-STX-A00ZB CAP, FR. BUMPER TOWING HOOK $8.89

71110-STX-A00ZB GARNISH, FR. BUMPER FACE SKID $30.02

71504-STX-A00ZB CAP, RR. BUMPER TOWING HOOK $8.89

71502-STX-A00ZB GARNISH, RR. BUMPER FACE SKID $33.84

site is http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org...sp/mws/home.jsp

I am sure that if I check with Tim http://hondacuraworld.com/ he can get them as well, and probably at a better price...

Do you have a link to pictures of these skid plates? I can't seem to locate a image on the site. What areas do they cover & how are they installed?

They are not skid plates as you may be thinkining. These are the gray light or dark plastic pieces (depending on your X's original color) on the MDX's lower front and rear bumpers.

Illus num. 5,6,13,15.

Excellent!! I can't believe they are only $35. Are they easy to install?
BADBRAD
Good idea and reasonable considering?

Rear bumper, follow steps 1-7 then reverse found here. https://hondacuraworld.hostasaurus....railerhitch.pdf

Front bumper follow steps 1-4 https://hondacuraworld.hostasaurus....dxfronttrim.pdf , replacing the trim should be simple once you get the bumper off it is just a matter of some extra screws.

I can't either. You guys are talking about two different things. There are the standard textured gray plastic "skid plates" that come standard on all MDX. Then there are the optional accessories called front and rear garnish. These are $207 (front) and $221 (rear) at hondacuraworld.com :

2007 Acura MDX Front Lower Garnish

Quantity in Basket: none
Code: 08P46-STX-200
Price: $206.55
Quantity:

The garnish adds a bright metallic-finish accent around the lower air intake and serves as a matching counter point to the grill. Aluminum Alloy material offers strength and corrosion protection. Precise fit for a refined appearance
Nxtr06
Shootist is correct.

I am talking about changing the light gray plastic shown on the Silver X to dark gray $35... Not the garnish shown on the Black X $200 (see next post).

I just dont like the Silver X, (light) gray front and rear plastic, dark grey side sill and splash gaurds plastic combo.

I want to change it to Silver X, (dark) gray front and rear plastic, dark grey side sill and splash gaurds plastic combo.

Sorry for any confusion...

I would love to paint the whole plastic bottom bumper billet silver to match the car. I'm having a hard time believing what I am seeing for around $35. If that is the case, I may have to buy an extra set and have it painted. I guess the extra set would be nice to have in case I jack it up.

Someone backed into my New MDX so I need to replace the rear bumper cover (the $35 part). Can anyone describe the procedure to remove the 8 "clips"? I had a Jeep and the clips always broke when you pulled the piece away from the body.

But new clips when you buy the $35 part.
(That's when you'll find out how they can seel the $35 part so cheap- each clip is $493)
Nxtr06
I have never had a problem removing the clips and reusing them, but if you need them...

38 91503-SZ5-003 CLIP, BUMPER FACE 7(REQ) 2007 MDX 2.45 1.96 (Total $13.72)

39 91505-S9A-003 CLIP A, BUMPER 3(REQ) 2007 MDX 1.72 1.38 (Total $4.14)

So less than $20 not a big deal...

The grey bumper inserts were the only things I did not liked about 2007 MDX. I've got Nimbus Grey color in march and the same day I bought the spare set of the plastic bumpers to be painted the same color as the car. Actually I'm going to pick them up from the paint shop tonight. I will install them soon and post some pictures. My paint guy told me that he had some problems to get smooth coverage because of the textured surface of the bumpers. He applied 2 coats of primer, color and flexible clear coat. I have not see them yet, but according to him they came out nice.

How much $$ it cost you buddy?

We (wife and I) are debating on whether to paint the light Grey ones we have to match the fender trim/running board color (satin black I suppose?) or paint them the Steel Blue color of the car itself?

Post pictures of them ASAP, on and off the car if you like.

:29: Cant wait to see yours!!

I think Acura should of painted the front and rear just like how the RDX is, when you order the sport package. For a another $100 your Sport Pack. MDX wont look like the base ones. Hopefully they change this next year. I mean come on the less expensive RDX bumbers are painted.
dejavudu94
Well I'm sure if it came painted, it would be more expensive to replace. There is a good and a bad side to this. The good is that the replacement plastic is only $35. That is great if you are living in the city and park on the street a lot. There are so many people who can not parallel park and bump into your car. Their license plate bolts always dig into the plastic bumpers. Painting it seems to be the bigger part of the cost than replacing it. For $35, you can get your car to look like new again. It is great for some people and not so for others.

jjacek , PLEASE do post pictures of your painted bumpers!!

The ugly gray bumpers and the transformer-like grill are my 2 biggest gripes about the appearance of the new MDX.

I pray that MDX's designer Rick Hsu will change those 2 things in next years' MDX.

DEFINITELY I will buy one if they make those changes.

Mechanically, I think the MDX is just one sweet machine!

Afte hearing so many of my friends complain about the MDX's bumper and grill, I think Acura could be selling a ton more MDX if they had gotten the aesthetics down like they have with the handling.

I really like the grill, it's different then anything else out there which in turn sets it apart from the crowd nicely.

 How did your painted inserts turn out?

:4: I'm anxious to see them!

Hello again,
For those who are interested in painting the bumper inserts:
I just picked up painted inserts last night. They came out ok. The color is slightly off, but it almost impossible to get perfect much without blending in surrounding parts, specially on metallic paints...
Anyway I will try to install the inserts asap, but knowing me it will take few days before I can get to it. As soon as I'm done I will post some pics...

While I like the painted bumper look, I have to say I do like these grey plastic bumper on my Nimbus Grey Sport Package. Since I do park in parking lots as well as parallel park, it seems I feel some degree of comfort that I won't experience the grief I have had with painted bumpers that get scratched up to expose underlying black color. In those days, I actually had to shell out to have the bumper re-painted.

I like them too. They're cheap to replace.
I also found that Zaino Tire Black makes them beautiful again. Dark grey becomes dark.

Would love to see those pics. I think I am going to get mine painted black to match also.

Count me in too! We have a 2007 black MDX and I really like the bumpers. After seeing the abuse the front end paint took on our 2003 black MDX, the plastic is a fantastic change.

Q: Does the Zaino Tire Black dry well or does it rub off on clothes?
