We own a 2004 MDX with app. 38,000 miles
Question concerning Towing:
"Is it safe to tow a boat and trailer having an approximate combined total weight of 3,500 pounds without having the "factory towing option" installed?"
Factory specifications state a max weight limitation of 4,500 pounds.
We will not tow in a mountainous area.
Thank you for your replies. |

Not if your fond of your transmission. Coolers are required for all trailer towing according to the 2004 MDX manual. Of course you do not have to use them, but you may run into warranty issues if there is a problem. Given Acura's tranny problems, I wouldn't chance it. |

| It would definitely void your warranty if something was to happen with your X if you don't have OEM trans/P.S. cooler on. There's not anything listed about the hitch itself, just the coolers, but I wouldn't take the risk either way. Stick with the whole OEM package, for your warranty sake. |

It's not just a "warranty thing", either. When you tow with the MDX, you will feel significant heat coming from the bottom of the vehicle when you step out. And that's with the aux coolers, towing only a 2,000 pound load.
In my opinion, after occasionally towing a 2,000 lb load with an 03 and 05 MDX, the aux coolers are mandatory. |

I wouldn't tow 3500 lbs with an MDX. If you've ever towed any kind of a load with a vehicle that is truly equipped to do so, you'll quickly realize the MDX is a pussycat of a towing vehicle.
I have the tow package on my MDX but only to occasionaly tow a relatively light Jetski. I have a pickup truck to tow my boat.
Better to stick to lighter loads with the MDX. |
