I just picked up a 2002 MDX last month with 50k miles on it. It came with an extended warranty from the used car dealer so I hope thats a good thing.
I read about the tranny problems on this site and after some research on my car, I found out I had a 2005 tranny in it so that is good news!!
Yesterday I was at the airport and I crank over the engine... it won't start up. The battery was working and I even got a jump just in case, but it still doesn't fire up.
I had to tow it to my moms house that was 10 miles away for $80. Now what??? Any ideas what is the problem? I forgot my key at my relative house in Utah so I used my spare key. Could that be the problem? The tow truck driver said it shouldn't matter since the starter turns over.
Thanks for any ideas to troubleshoot this problem!! |

FYI, I called the dealer and they said it's probably my spare key that I had made that won't work. I have to use an original key for the car!! Dang.
The good news is that I have an extra original key at my home. |

Interesting....so I take it you had never tried the spare key in the past.
Was the spare key the factory 'Valet key'? That one should still start the car...just not unlock the glovebox.
Fill us in when you get the verdict. |

.
THe keys have a transponder chip inside. The MDX reads the chip to make sure someone's not trying to steal the car. If it doesn't find the properly programmed chip, it disables the ignition and fuel pump. The car will crank all day and not turn over.
If you get a new key, get it from Acura. Then all the keys have to be re-programmed at the same time, with the vehicle. That's why a new key costs more than a pair of shoes. |

That's really cheap. We've seen some $135 dollar key replacements. Plus fob! |

| So are you saying it was the spare key that was malfunctioning? |

Im sure he's saying he prob had a spare key that didn't have a transponder chip. So in essence the MDX immobilizer did it's job. |

Yes, it was my spare key I made for @$2 w/o the chip.
I now hide that key and have a key with the chip hidden inside my car.
Thanks for all the info!!!
