rattling rear license plate ??? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Everytime I shut the cargo door the license plate rattles from the bottom hitting against the car metal. Only the top part of the plate is secured with screws and there are no holes in the MDX for the bottom screws (unlike the ones in the front).

The dealer stuck some foam and it didn't work. The rattling is stuck in my head now and gets on my nerves each time. So I removed the foam and stuck 1 velcro in the bottom middle. It still rattles and my guess is its coming off the sides.

Before I go crazy with more velcro I thought I can ask others if they have/had the same issue and how they dealt with it.
Thanks!

I haven't checked the MDX, but on my daily driver (the Escape) there are two foam feet about 1/4" thick and set 2" diagonally from the bottom corners of the plate. A batch of trucks were delivered without those foam feet and had a rattle - some dealers were given a letter to go check cars on the lot and install feet as necessary.

If the foam feet your dealer installed didn't help, then your license plate might be warped. You could be able to fix it by placing it against the edge of a table and, lightly tapping with a hammer, flare out the edges. If that doesn't work, you might have to go crazy with the velcro - I think a velcro border with one diagonal strip will suffice.

If you don't mind the look of a license plate holder, that will help with the rattling, as well as possibly straighten out your plate.

The license plate is new. I'll try velcro on the sides and if the rattle still persists then I may have to go for a plate holder though I don't like the looks of it. I haven't taken a closer look at any plates holder but I would think its bottom would still create some noise when u shut the door.

Any reason why the makers don't put the 2 extra holes ? The cars I've owned (all Toyotas) always had 2 holes in the front and 4 in the back to secure the plates.

Same rattling here, even with my SF 49er plate holder. Reduced the rattle a bit by putting a couple of round cork tabs at the bottom corners. It is annoying, though. My TL doesn't rattle.....

HAHA!! I just brought my X in for the same thing! I'm not sure what they did, but it is fixed. I recommend the next time you bring it in for an oil change just have them fix it. Best of luck!!

What about some double sided tape? The thick 3M kind.

Tear off a little piece of a sponge and squeeze it beteen the license and the panel.

Necessity, the mother of invention.

Search for Dynamat on the web. Rear license plates are one of the primary uses of Dynamat- they actually sell pieces cut to fit. (Big Stereos often cause so much vibration that they rattle the plate.)
Use Ultimate Dynamat on the back of your license plate, and it will calm it right down. I have two layers on mine.

I had the same problem when I purchased my '03. I found one side had the foam stop and it had fallen off the other side.

I used a piece of black foam weather stripping and (with some minor trimming) it matches the original piece exactly. I got a whole role at Home Depot for about 5 bucks. It is sticky on one side. I can post a picture if there is any interest.

Cheers! :2:

Problem Solved !! :D
I removed the thin black casing/housing (don't know what its called) that has the dealer's name on it. No more rattling. I still have the velcro in the bottom middle.

Uh oh ! I am wondering now if removing the casing is a good idea. May be its meant to protect the paint from scratches/rust. I'll look into the dynamat solution. At least I don't have to put up with that rattling till then.

My husband used rubber gromits (the kind for screws going into the wall) and fit those in the two bottom holes....now no more rattle.

i don't get why you just don't bring it in. It is not like it has to be fixed pronto. Just wait until your nexy oil-change

Dejay,
1. Acura dealer is far from my place.
2. They did not fix it the last time. We both assumed they took care of it.
3. My next oil change may take quite a while. I average less than 10 miles a day. Meanwhile if I can fix it, even temporarily its one less nagging thing off my mind.

allright, glad that you got it fixed:7:

I had the same issue - here is how I resolved it. I took the plate off, got 4 rubber washers and 2 additional (10mm - I think) screws and then put the license plate back on using 4 screws and rubber washers - no more rattles.
