Hi All,
I am facing some weired issue with my 2007 MDX. After I turn off the AC, I start getting some bad sweat smell for about a minute and then only get the fresh air. I've gone to dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong with AC. They did some Fragrance treatment but it's not helping.
Anyone else facing the same?
Thanks,

You have moisture in your AC/Heater system. Where do you live? There is a product recommended to me by Tim. This is a commerical product that works. I'm surprised you got hosed by your dealership playing the "nothing wrong" game....
Check this out at www.wurthusa.com Look for " Air conditioning & Heating system treatment. I had to apply this to my 04 RL and NO I don't live in Humid country as that has nothing to do with it. If you do many "short" drives with the AC or heater, that's enough to cause condensation in your system. Very much like if you were to fill a drinking glass with Ice and leave it out condensation will form on the outside of the glass.....that is basically what is happening to your system thus causing "meldew/mold". Now if your dealership just "sprays" this in the vents, that is a band-aid approach. The correct way is to pull your allergen filters out that are located in the dashboard and spray the entire can into the distribution fan so it gets into the entire system.....so what approach did that louzy dealership perform??????
Hope this helps ! Print this out and bring this ammo to those idiots ! |

| Here are some pictures of that project and where the filters and distribution fan is located in the dash of my 04 RL. |

| Oh while you are there you may want to change the filters or have some on hand as they need to be changed at about 15,000 miles or so waiting till 30,000 is absurd ! Notice the white assembly? That's where you spray ONE entire can into the system with the engine on and AC on and spray till empty........It has a potent Lemon smell ! |

| Corvettes have a similar issue. Quick fix - turn off AC ~2 miles before you arrive at destination. |

Scully is right. When Acura copied they got the bad smell part also from BMW.
Happens on my 530i also.
I got used to stop A/C few minutes before getting to work.
Just today, noticed the same on X as I drove it today and it is hot out there! |

| ..on my '03 Touring. Changed the cabin air filter and it went bye, bye. Seems to be a common problem with a dirty cabin air filter. |

| My bad. Didn't notice you were talking about an '07. sorry 'bout that. Keep complaining to the dealer would be my solution. |

| I thought we had the same problem, but I have identified the smell when the seat heater is turned off, smells like rotten eggs for a few minutes!! |

troye, your problem as well as others may not be attibuted to the A/C system, it may be a fuel/cat issue. I have an 05 waiting on my 07 and occasionally get the smell, and it goes away, I just blame the gas and try to use my favorite gas station all the time. See an Acura announcment about it below...
Answer on OwnerLink
Just got my registration for OwnerLink and took a look at the Maintenance FAQ section and this topic was addressed in question #1 in the Fuel FAQ area
What's that sulfur smell coming from my vehicle?
All gasolines contain trace amounts of sulfur. The human sense of smell can detect sulfur odor in concentrations as low as 3 to 5 parts per million in air.
_
The exhaust on today's catalyst-equipped Acura vehicles will emit varying degrees of sulfur odor depending on operating temperatures and conditions. On normally operating vehicles, the odor is usually noticeable when the engine is cold, right after deceleration, or after wide-open throttle acceleration.
_
It may not be possible to eliminate sulfur odor completely due to the various operating conditions.

| I'm wondering if you switch gas stations if that will improve your issue. Perhaps some brands use different levels of additives that would help. I've been using Chevron and have not experienced such issues. I'm in Northern California so it may vary from state to state as our octane is only 91 out here. We would all wish it is as easy as switching gas brands. Hopefully it works, it wouldn't hurt to maybe give that a try. See how it is after two fill ups with a different brand. |

| Let's get back on topic. They said the smell was in the cabin of the vehicle. NO exhust smell should be working in way into the cabin of the X! The AC smell originally mentioned has to do with the Air Conditioner system building up moisture thus leaving a musty smell in the car ! Anyone who stands besides a running car esp. in a garage can expect nothing pleasant to the nose ! :1: :1: :1: :1: |

I guess the best thing is to take your vehicle back to the dealership. Why bother paying for all this stuff if you are still under warranty? Worry about that after your warranty is up. I don't think any of our recommendations will really help you because we are all speculating and it will never solve your problem without looking at your car or maybe taking something apart to figure it out.
Hopefully you won't be like the guy from this thread below.

OMG! Is it me or is the photo in that thread funny as heck? I felt bad for the guy but I couldn't stop laughing. I'm sure that left a bad odor.

I have owned many Honda products over the years and have noticed the smell when you don't run the A/C in FRESH mode most of the time. With RECIRC it can easily get a nasty mildew smell and especially if you leave the car with the RECIRC ON - the car can't breath.
On cars with digital temp controls like the X, I have found it works best to leave the system on AUTO and adjust the TEMP vs. FAN to control the cooling. Let the system control the fan rather than leaving temp low and override the AUTO fan speed. In the old days you left to temp on max cold and set the fan so you did not freeze. That leaves with very little air flowing to keep the moisture under control. Keep the RECIRC off unless you need extreme cooling or in smoky conditions.
After the you have the smell, I found the best way to get rid of it was to do as others have mentioned, turn off the A/C two mins from the house and max out the fan. After a few trips you should be able to go back to normal operations.
I think leaving the A/C on AUTO and adjust the temp is the best SOP for cars with auto climate control. |

My MDX is about 3 months old now and I've noticed that same. thing. We used to have an old Mercedes that did the same thing, but it was old. I didn't expect it for a new car to have this problem, neither my Audi or 2 previous Fords had this problem.
It is indeed moisture in the heat exchanger box.
As posted above, (the pics of the RL) the MDX has a similar filter.
It is easily user accessible, it's behind the glove box. Just open the glovebox (make sure it empty the glove box too) and press along the right side of the glove box so it opens past it's stop. You'll also notice a plastic plunger pull out of a tube, this is simply the dampening system for when you open the glovebox, just be sure to re-insert the piston into the tube when you put the glovebox back in.
You'll notice a rectangular 'hatch' behind the glovebox, this is the cabin air filter, simply remove and squirt that stuff into it.
I haven't done this, but it makes sense. |

| This is a very common problem with cars. The tip I received years ago was to turn off the AC before getting home and letting the ventilation run. That helps clear the moisture out before you turn the car off. |
