Considering buying 01 MDX-but concerned about transmission - Click HERE for Original Thread

I am hoping someone will be able to help me out. I am considering buying an 01 MDX used---there are two I'm interested in one with 44,000 miles and the other 56,000. I am concerned about all of the transmission problems though. I'm expecting that there may be problems with the tranny. Is the tranmission covered until 100,000 miles under factory warranty? How is Acura handling all of these issues? Should I buy a warranty that would cover the engine and tranny? What is this good faith deal I've heard about? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Unless the vehicle has extended warranty, no the transmission is not covered. Acura has not officially extended the powertrain warranty as it did on the CL.

If you read the posts here, Acura has spotty coverage when you're out of warranty. Most of the successful owners were those with low mileage and probably had their X serviced at their dealer. Some have paid for labor.

If I were you, I'd think long and hard about the potential out-of-pocket expenses, versus buying an 03 or later model when the tranny was redesigned.

Good luck.

Warranty or not, why buy any vehicle that you know up front has a transmission that will be considered blessed if it can even make it past 100k miles? It's still a hassle to take it in and be without your vehicle while the transmission is being replaced...all the while you're praying that Acura will goodwill it and eat the $4-5k repair.

Increase your odds. Buy an '03 or newer model. May be more money up front. But hopefully you'll save money in the future by not having to replace a transmission, throttle body, or EGR valve. All of which are common failures for the 2001-02 model.

So should I kneel in gratitude whenever I enter the sacred cockpit of my 115K 2001 Nighthawk Black Pearl Gift From the Gods? :2:

When I traded my 01 it had 99,878 miles on it.

Never had any problems with the transmission.

CR reported the 2001 CL "significant tranny problem" response as 25% in the latest auto issue. It's one of the few hard pieces of data they did report. As a reason for not extending the tranny warranty to the MDX, Acura claims that the MDX failure rate is much lower. I would guess it probably is lower but "much" is debatable. So are you willing to risk buying a vehicle that you don't know the background of where there is a 1 in 4 chance you may have to lay out $5K? Given Acura's inconsistent reimbursment policy these days and the additional difficulty of being the second owner, I'd avoid the 2001/2002 model year unless I could negotiate that $5k right off the top of the best deal I could negotiate. You can't get an AcuraCare warranty and you'd also be gambling on whether any third party warranty company would still exist when you needed it.....

With the 3.2TL/CL...it's just a matter of time. When I see one come in that has over 100k on the odometer and still has its original transmission, it's a rare event. Very rare.

The 2001-02 MDX? The failure rate is less. But I'd still put the percentage in the teens.
