Got an OEM hitch installed to tow seadoo boat. Trailer came with 5 pin flat connector and 'Moxie' as we call the MDX has either a 4 pin flat or 7 pin round. The trailer has disc brakes with surge, and I'm wondering if the MDX has electronic brake control, more-over, is it worth it to get a 5 pin to 7 pin adaptor or do i need to get an electric brake controller. Could I rewire the trailer end to a 7 pin?
Sorry if it's a stupid question, previous tow was 4pin on both vehicle and trailer, so never had to worry/think about it. |

Trailer brakes are of 3 kinds.. surge or electric or air.. Most water borne..( boat or PWC trailers use surge brakes, simply because the complication of electrical connections and water is not a good mix.. for that matter, salt water and any kind of brakes is not a good mix. Most trailer Mfg's do not make electric brakes for water use trailers.
The 5th pin on newer trailers is attached to the reverse light on your vehicle. That reverse activation engages a switch that prevents the surge activator on the top of the coupler from activating the brakes while you are moving backwards. ( the gravity and normal reversing is a reason for surge brake activation., The switch replaces the pin lock that is still in use to prevent reverse activation of the brakes.
Your 7 way rv style pin has an electric brake, a 12 volt direct line and an auxiliary circuit in addition to the normal lamp circuits and ground, for the purposes of advance trailer wiring needs.
Your choices here are to get a simple 7 to 5 adapter to plug in your PWC 5 flat plug or have a good technician wire your reverse lamp into a 5 flat harness. Piggyback to the 4 flat for the reverse.
That will take car of your needs.
Suggest you keep the brakes washed after each dunking.. and service them after every season.. grease, wiring and brakes take a beating in water..
hope this helps..
