Resolution on Radio Lights - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi All:

I searched the forums and found several threads about the Bose System backlighting going out.

Well, I've run into the same thing. Quite the annoyance not being able to see the radio controls at night.

I saw no resolutions other than replacing the radio ($700) or perhaps the faceplate.

Has anyone found an alternative to these?

Thanks Much,

Just replace the faceplate. There was a bulletin for the buttons not working, so the factory made faceplates available. Here's the part number...

Thanks SuperTech.

Since there was a bulletin posted for this, should Acura pay for this faceplate?

If not, Tim, do you sell the faceplate? If so, how much?

Many thanks

Just because there's a bulletin doesn't mean you're warrantied forever on a particular issue. If a bulletin is issued with a warranty extension, which this one is not, then there's a chance you are covered. Another type of bulletin is called a product update, that may never expire which dealers are supposed to apply if you bring your vehicle in to the dealer for anything.

Why not replace the leds? (Are the leds in the 'faceplate'?)

The tread discussed replacement of the face plate to resolve the backlighting not working. I spoke with the local Acura dealer about it and he said the face plate tech bulletin on the radios had to do with the 3,4 and 5 buttons not working on the face plate but it was not necessarily for the entire set of backlights on the radio face plate not working which is what my problem is. Did anyone actually replace the face plate and it actually worked so the radio backlights worked after replacing the face plate??? I would like to know before I spend the $75.00 for the new face plate.

Thanks

Yeah, I believe others on this board have replaced the faceplate, which indeed was made available by Honda as a seperate part in response to the "sticking buttons" bulletin.

However, because the new faceplate also contains the new tiny backlight bulbs, it resolves the backlight issue.

If you are into DIY, replacing the backlight is seemingly doable...and I do believe that there are actually many posts and threads in the forums with detailed instruction on how to remove the center console components in order to access and swap the faceplate.

I have the same backlight issue. I just recently ordered the faceplate from HondaAcuraWorld for $53.47 and plan on installing myself once I receive the part.

Part ID: 39100-HXB-4035

I'll take pics and post step-by-step as I do it myself.

Hey RC98 thanks for the information, I really appreciate it. I will check out the web site for the part since the dealers wants $75.00.

If you don't mind,I think I will wait until you remove your radio before I tackle mine. I am definitely a DIY guy but if I can get some tips, that is always appreciated.

Thanks!

PS When do yo think you will undertake this little DIY project??

Not a problem. The guys at HONDAACURAWORLD indicated that I should have the part by next week. Depending on when that is, I'll probably do the install shortly after and then post pics.

Bizarre. After spending a night outside on the coldest night so far this fall (my MDX is normally garaged), the radio backlights are now functional. This happened last week. They still work.

So, once I receive the parts I ordered, I will still remove the center console to replace the burnt out hazard backlights and interior dome light control backlight, but will obviously not swap out the faceplate unless it should again go out.

Why cant all fixes be as easy as that :)

Very interesting! My back lights come and go as well. Most of the time they are off but occasionally they will come on for a few minutes and if I am lucky a few days but they are mostly off. I went to the HondaAccurWorld web site and I could not find any radio face plate for the MDX. Did you actually find it on their web site or did you have to phone them to get ti??

Yes, I called in my order. Refer to the part number and they'll be able to pull it up. 1-888-RAY LAKS

Sorry to hear the lights are out again, it sure is annoying when they come and go.

I will give them a call tomorrow and get one ordered for myself.

Thanks!

Well I got bored last night and decided to see if I could remove the radio and I was successful. I found a web site that had some instructions on how to remove the radio for $4.99 but I can't get it to attach to this string. There are probably some free instructions out there but I couldn't find any, the web site is www.carstereohelp.com/stereoremoval_Aftermarket.htm

I tried inserting a 1" to 1.25" wide puddy knife between the dash board material and the wood grained piece on the left side and just could not get it to budge. I then tried the right side of the radio between the radio face plate and the wood grained finished piece at the point where the joint between the radio face plate and the upper LCD screen meet. (Note: remove the radio buttons so you have more area to pry the puddy knife). I applied the prying force towards the radio face plate and I felt/heard a little snap sound. I then continued down around the bottom and back up the left side.

Once I had the radio/LCD component out, I was then able to get the face plate off the radio after removing about 10 screws and prying some clips. So what I am wondering is if you received your part and is it just the circuit board behind the face plate or is it the whole black face plate and the circuit board on the back side?

If you want to discuss over the phone I would be willing share my cell phone number. Let me know and good luck if you haven't already removed it.

I apologize smitty...I could have saved you 4.99 by posting my pics for the DIY removal...pretty easy as you found out.

Anyway, the faceplate replacement is the whole black faceplate + the circuit board behind it.

As I mention in this post, replacing the plate did not remedy the illumination issue.

Resolution of Radio Illumination Part II

Unfortunately I now have a useless extra faceplate. Hondaacuraworld will not take returns on electronics that were already installed. Anyone on the board need a new faceplate by chance :)?

Not sure what to do now short of replacing the radio which is not an option. No way I'm spending $700+ on a radio when mine still functions sans illumination.

Oh well. If anyone finds a resolution, or has had success reviving illumination with replacing the faceplate, pls post!

Well that sucks! I just ordered mine Monday so maybe I will call them and see if they can stop the order or if I can mail it back. The local Accura dealer quoted me $250 to send the radio into a repair shop and $200 to remove and replace it.

Thanks for the information.
