EGR Valve Replacement - Fuel Injector Cleaning, WTF? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Ok my MDX has been running slowly so via searching here I found it's likely the EGR. They called me back and said it was gunked up with carbon and that they're replacing it.

Then he said, I should do a fuel injector clean/flush because otherwise it'll just get gunked up again really quickly.

I guess I understand this logic, but isn't the reason the EGR valve got gunked up due to it being defective.

Also, for $129 are they going to do anything more than run some crappy chemical through there that I could likely buy off the shelf?

We sort of nurse the car when we drive it so I'm sure there's some valve/fuel injector build up since we rarely get on it, but is their cleaning service anything special?

Thanks,
Brian

It's not "defective", it's worn out. The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculator) has a dirty job, and it gets crudded up after awhile.
I can't tell if the tech is recommending a good dose of snake oil, or if he discovered that your fuel injectors were gummed up. At $130, I'd probably pass this up. The EGR valve part doesn't cost too much more than this.

Assume they replaced the egr valve under warranty as it is still covered to 80K or so.

Yes it's under warranty. The dealer originally said "No", but I printed out multiple threads here that said it's for 8 years of 80k miles. He had no problem doing it under warranty after he saw those.

He says the reason it got clogged is because of carbon and that if I want to avoid it happening again I need to get their $150 carbon cleaning crap. That was my question here.

It's my understanding that there's fundamentally something wrong with the 01-02 original EGR valves and the new ones replaced under warranty are modified. Am I correct about this? I don't think modern cars really need any chemical treatments.

The EGR needs to be replaced mainly due to the diaphragm is broken or other mechanical problems. For carbon build up, just clean it. No need to replace. Of course, if it's covered under warranty, the dealer will replace it.

We have our first MDX a 2001 with 97K for a year now. Check engine light came on, FWD light soon after. Checked this website and replaced the EGR valve on a guess it might help. Both lights now out, smoother running, fuel economy improved. Purchased EGR for $130 from local parts store and 10 minutes of work took a half hour to complete. Thanks to picture posting on breaking stud, we were careful to apply WD40 soak and nut broke loose with a snap. Cheers.
