Nose bra flapping - anyone found a good solution - Click HERE for Original Thread

Anyone use the bra and have the upper part flap up on you (the bottom was nice and tight)? I did recently on a long trip. I noticed how small the little "lip" or spoiler on the top is. I guess its supposed to keep the bra down. I noticed I kept having to pull the bra up and tight. I also noticed that if I kept the lower part held with some velcro under the hood it helped. I dont know, maybe I put too much wax on the hood prior to install so it was so slick. I know my Cobra bra was rock solid to at least 100mph. This thing would begin flapping at 65-70. If its not just me, maybe if we all complain acura will redesign it and send us updated ones. Can't have been that many sold just yet.

I have posted the same problem in this forum but haven't heard anything about it. I drove the car twice with it on and got fed up with it and just returned it.

Ok, glad I am not the only one than. I was hoping more people would respond. Then I would write Acura so they can come up with a fix or a redesign. Its only the top part that is a problem. The bottom is fine.

K&N Air Filter or intake system. Boosts mileage and power and you can go 50k, clean the filter and put it back in. Dont have to buy crappy and expensive paper air filters.

Go to www.knfilters.com if you want more info.

from anyone except Colgan. They invented the bra, I believe, and after using several over different vehicle since 1969, they have never sold me a bad fitting one.
I know its a less expensive alternative to clear bras, but anymore, with all the different angles put on vehicles in front, can understand how hard it its to design one to fit perfectly everywhere and not move at high speed. Might see if Colgan has one that fits MDX, you can also call them and ask them about their products.. I dont know who sells them or how to find them anymore, must be a google to Colgan, and go from there. Good luck.. DanF

They only make 01-03 MDX. Not the 07. I think the problem is the air foil at the top of the factory bra is just too small and not reinforced. I found on one trip that by pulling up on the top edges every stop kept it from flapping until about 70 mph which was acceptable but I like to average around 80. I did find that a guy on another car web site says he stopped the flapping on his Mercedes by twising the straps before hooking them. This tightened them. There are the two straps at the top that hook into the hood that the next time I need to use the bra I will try that. I was hoping to get posts from anyone else having the same problem. That way I could call acura and tell them its a problem and not just me. Maybe I need to do one of those poll posts.

Gave me an idea; look in the pocket of that top bra airfoil, it should be a piece of hard plastic shaped in an inverted V so that it holds the pocket upright, correct? Perhaps you can put something else in that pocket to strengthen the airfoil so that it doesnt bend backwards at speed? If this airfoil stays straight up and the wind hits it, this will keep the top bra pulled back tightly and hopefully from moving on the car.. You dont want it moving on the paintwork at all, as this can cause marring that would have to be taken out with a rubbing compound. Good luck, perhaps call or email Colgan if you cant get yours working and ask them if they are going to make an '07 MDX model bra anytime soon? Or maybe you can get that pricey clearbra? Maybe some kits out there let you install it yourself? Ive seen it done, its just clean the paint with mix of alcohol and water to remove all wax, spray soap solution on paint, and peel and stick on the clearbra, carefully squeegee it so as to remove as many airbubbles as possible, etc.. Good luck, DanF

Of the Acura bra anyway, and get the clearbra sometime before your next trip.. I had one put on our '04 MDX when new and its saved us alot of damage from flying objects.. DanF

I have seen those clear bra's and I dont like them. It reminds me of a new electronic item with the plastic protection on the screen. Besides, I only use the bra maybe 3-4 times a year for road trips. I did take a look at the "airfoil" and there is no plastic I can see. Its just the vinyl looped over and sewn into the bra. I think I will email Acura soon about this.

Used to the clearbra look. And it cost alot more than the other type. If that top "airfoil" piece of the bra doesnt stand up without moving back, it will never be able to hold the bra on the SUV at speed. Guess its not the best design here. All the Colgan products have this figured out as I said in earlier post. If I was just going out a few times a year and didnt have to worry about local roads, I would opt for that bra too, if they made one for my year. Here its too much crap on the worse than words can describe freeways, full of rocks and stuff that gets thrown on your paintwork every day just going to work.. Hope you are enjoying the new MDX !! Hey, sigp228 & biglee73, I think I've found the fix for our "flapping bras". Installed my factory bra today, test drove and yep, flapping between 65-80 mph. Figured out that we have to "stand up" the back edge airfoil part. I think we've been laying down that back edge flush with the hood. There's a rolled hem underneath that back edge Spread this hem out flat and stand up the airfoil part STRAIGHT UP. Use your fingers to put a deep crease in front of the airfoil. Looking from the side it should look like an upside down Y. Air will catch into the crease and keep the airfoil in place. Test drove up to 80 mph no flapping! Will get flapping when you change lanes at high speeds if you get cross winds/draft from other cars, esp. big rigs, but once you straighten out your o.k.
Hope this helps out.

Thanks for thinking of me!!!!! I noticed that when I got the bra. I would go over the crease several times to try to "stand up" the air foil. I think however that the foil is a little too small and its not stiff enough. The bra's on my mazda and my mustang had some sort of plastic inside the foil keeping them up and straight. What I found was by stopping every so often and pulling up on the sides of the bra to try to tighten the top seemed to help some. I also placed some velcro on the bottom of the hood and the bra to keep it from sliding up which allowed air to get under the bra. Someone suggesting twisting the straps on the top part to tighten them. I am going to try that the next time. I still think Acura needs to get a better design and give us one of them.

I'm embarassed to tell you what I did.

I put 3 balled up socks under the nose bra.. It looked weird but worked.

I only use the nose bra for long trips. I agree they need to come up with a better design.

Would not be the first time I saw a stuffed bra!!!!!!

About 2 months ago there was a thread on the hood portion of the 2007 MDX nose "bra" flapping at speeds about 65 MPH.

I have the same problem and have not found a real solution.

Has anyone here found a solution that works?

Thanks,

George

PS.. I am going on a trip to FLA (bugs) in 3 days.

I saW and was part of that thread.. The "solution" was not fool proof.. i.e. it still flaps.

I was wondering if anyone else used the solution and did it work?

mdx4us,

Could you post a picture of what you did to keep this thing from flapping?

Thanks,

George

Sorry about that, I didn't notice......

For those who have bought the acura factory bra I ask that you file a complaint with Acura Client Services. I contacted them and wanted to email them some web sites that have people complaining about it. They said that they do not use web sites that they only track registered complaints via them or the dealerships. They said one person could want something and then have their friends post things. I suppose that would be extreme but I can understand their position. They said if alot of people complained about a problem, they would then have the item reviewed and engineering involved. So voice your opinion via mail, fax, or phone call. I did.
