What's the ugliest car out there? - Click HERE for Original Thread

davegood
I got this topic off of the Acura TL forum -- thought it was a funny debate. Most people are stuck between the following 3

Pontiac Aztec
Isuzu Vehicross
Chevy Avalanche

Feel free to add your own -- I included an image of each.

uggliest
msu79gt82
... are the three ugliest "things" on the planet! At least Volkswagon called their old ugly car rightly The Thing, but Aztek!

Hey davegood, I also saw this over in TL where it is actually a sticky poll. Does this mean you own/considering a TL also?
wmquan
No doubt about it to me. It's the Aztek.
A2MDXer
At least the Isuzu went all the way with the aggressive look. The Aztek looks like an Isuzu that collided with a minivan.:D

davegood
I really like the TL, and think it is an awesom value for the money, but I was just checking out some of the other forums. Upon doing so, I really think that we have one of the best forums -- a bunch of the other ones kinda get really stupid fast -- Acura TL Off Topic - What is the best time to have sex?

While it is important to have an off topic area -- I really could care less when anyone here has sex.

In any case, I looked at the TL in 2000, but ended up going with an Audi A6, because I love that quattro in the snow.
hondacuraworld
My vote is for the Buick Rendezvous. From the back, it looks like a horse-assed LeSabre.
TheWorm
The Aztek really is an abomination, IMnsHO. I actually like the Isuzu -- I wouldn't buy it for me, but at least it's a bold statement and visually looks well-integrated and put together. The Aztek looks like an experiment from the spare parts bin (or junkyard) gone awry.
davegood
I forgot to actual state my winner. I really feel that the Aztec has to win the 'What the hell were they thinking award?' or "who would buy that?'

I remember watching the first season of Survivor -- I remember that that guy Richard won one of those for winning the series. The best part was watching him act excited about winning it. I wonder if he actually drove it all the way home, or just sold it to a dealer on route?
davegood
I also have to give an honorable mention for what the hell were they thinking to the Lincoln Blackwood -- not that it is a fugly car, but how many people want an ultra luxurious pickup truck where you can't even remove the pickup lid?
Ronsully
Hey, I almost bought an Aztec. It was a toss up for me between the Aztec and the MDX. The Aztec almost got the win because the built in Ice Box and of course how beautiful the car is. Especially in Yellow! The only reasons I didn't go with the Aztec are: 1- Too Luxiourios
2- Too Sporty
3- Too Expensive
4- Demand is Too high. The wait is like 6 months +
5- Too Fast, I might get a ticket
6- Too many people would stop me and ask questions
because they were envious.
7- Pontiac prizes quality Too much for my tastes....

I went ahead and bought my second choice the MDX.. Darn it, I knew I should have picked the Aztec...No weeping mirrors on it. Does it have mirrors or does it have those video monitor displays. :D
BosMDX
Pontiac couldn't pay me enough to drive an Aztec. Maybe Pontiac should not have gone with a blind focus group when giving the Aztec the thumbs up.
davegood
Don't ever say that Pontiac couldn't 'pay you enough to drive it'

Although I would sooner be seen dead than in one of those hideous things, I am quite sure the General Motors posseses the wherewithall to pay me enough to drive it (after all, you know that Tiger doesn't actually drive a buick when he's not in an ad for one, they just pay him enough to drive one occasionally).

So, never say never.

Vehicross and Aztec even looks poisonous.
MGTD
Aztec hands down, but then the MB ML and the BMW X5 are not really great looking either. For that matter the MDX is a bit boring looking. That was my biggest gripe for the MDX. I am still not excited by it visually.

Chris
AtlantaMDX
Aztec is definatley the fugliest! I actually like the looks of the Vehicross (not that I'd ever buy one mind you).
davegood
I'll give you that the MB may look a little like a minvan, however, I don't think it can even be brought up in this forum (not even in the same ugly league as the others mentioned in this thread.

I personally think that the X5 is very cool looking, especially with the 4.4 big wheels on it. It's just too small and a too pricey for what you get. Either way, although subjective, I would hope that you agree that whatever you don't like about the X5's looks, it can't compare with an Aztec.
Syzygy
I agree, the Aztek and Vehicross look awful! In fact, the yellow-colored Vehicross kinda looks like those old bulky Sony "Sports" walkmans!

dMDX
Although Aztek wins, you don't see too many of them on the road to get annoyed at least.

I think Lincoln Navigator, although looks nice from the front, its back end is really ugly because the rear window and the tail-lights are out of proportion in both size and shape. They look like an afterthought.
Words
I didn't know one existed. Thanks!

... does that mean you have a TL or are considering one?

I agree MB is also ugly as sin, but X5 is OK with me.
FatBoyMDX
Every time I see someone driving an Aztec, I'm surprised they spent their money on it. .
Pontiac was actually offering people $50 to test drive those things.
Ldumont
I agree with EVERYONE whole heartedly. The Aztec wins this one hands down.

Did anyone notice that in that promotional shot of the (gulp) yellow Aztec, that young man is desperately attempting to scale that rock to escape it?

Climb, man, CLIMB!

As Richard Hatch is the local celebrity, I CAN say that I haven't noticed that car outside his house yet. :) (Not that I'm a stalker or anything...)

Doesn't it say a lot when even someone that WINS one for FREE won't drive it?
golfski
In defense of the Aztec, is there anyone out there who doesn't smile, or chuckle when you see one?? I know that I do, and it's not just in sympathy for the guy driving it. It sort of reminds me of the Simpson's, and the car that Homer built.

I saw somebody driving a bright yellow MB E-class station wagon.... now THAT's ugly!

No, for most people it is the gag reflex! :)

That sometimes can be confused with a smile!

Even my 8 yr old daughter makes a now infamous squeal "EEEiyewwwww! An Aztek!" when she spots one. (Granted she could rattle off the features of the MDX before we even ordered it.)

As for the E class wagon in that bright yellow, I can only ask why someone would do that???
davegood
'The Homer' --

Now that was a car -- that was one of my favorite Simpsons episodes -- with the dual 'pods' to keep the children separate from the parents, and the rolls royce type grill

I found a picture of it:
Ldumont
Ha...good find, Davegood!

Nothing beats the Simpsons.

Oh and just for the record...the Homer got my daughter's stamp of approval!
callowna
The aztec makes me physically ill every time I see it. I am trying to figure out a way to sue Pontiac for forcing me to look at that thing. That way they can finance my MDX. (I am still in med school so I can't afford one yet :( )

gto-dave
aztec wins, but this one's an eyesore too.
golfski
After seeing the picture of the Homer, I don't know why the Aztec reminded me of it.... The Homer is MUCH better looking!
davegood
The Homer was just a car that was ahead of its time. The Aztec is just a car that has no idea of its time, or style, or engineering, or.......
msu79gt82
... Honda's new concept vehicle; Model X is so hideous that the Aztek looks nice.

Mantis
I agree. The Aztek wins the Gold. Their promo should go like this: [Quote]

"Hey guys check out this cool tent I bought! They tossed in this ugly a$$ car to carry it with though." :D :D :D
davegood
Good promotion -- buy a tent, get a free Aztec. I knew there had to be a way to unload those things.
AtlantaMDX
the AZTEK... isn't that the car that Cody (from Survivor) slept with his mom in?

Now that's the way to promote the car.... The car you sleep with your mom in! Definately a small demographic group (hopefully) :D
davegood
Probably as small as the demographic that finds the Aztec worth buying. I still can't believe that after all of their focus groups and people sitting around nobody stood up and say 'have you people noticed that this thing is completely ugly?

Imagine having that on your resume - 'lead designer - Ponitac Aztec' - might be better to be a convicted felon.
msu79gt82
... because I get the "privilige" of seeing these two Azteks on a fairly frequent basis:(

Indeed I see almost as many Azteks on the road as I see MDXs:confused:
davegood
You're lucky to live so close to Aztec owners -- I'm sure that their hot pink painted shutters and black siding (or whatever other architectual features their house may have) really help your property value.
msu79gt82
... for daring to break the mold and be different.;)

Just think virtually all SUVs look the same; they all look like the classic Jeep Cherokee. All the Fords, and most others all look basically the same. Consider: Passport, 4Runner, Landcruiser, MB, CR-V, Forrester, etc, etc, etc - all variations on the basic theme.

Lexus tried to break the mold with the EX300, and BMW strayed a little with the X5, both with some success.

As I said Kudos to Acura and Pontiac for trying;)
Acura has a big WINNER:D :D
and Pontiac, well they tried:( I'll give them that much.
DarkAcura
As bad as the aztec is, I think the Buick Rendezvous is the ugliest. It is a mini van that is trying to look like a SUV that looks like a mini van. Its step in height is lower than my tl's and it has a center counsel that looks like a shelf. I sat in a Rendezvous at my dealership while waiting for my TL to get serviced right after sitting in the Aztec. It was like going from bad to worse.
wmquan
Maybe the Rendezvous wouldn't be as ugly if it had at least decent power ;) Performance sometimes helps the perception of ugliness, though some critics of certain Porsches will disagree.
wmquan
Saw another one today. I don't care if it has some really good stuff in it. Why does the BMW M-couple look like a subcompact hatchback with a long nose?

http://carpoint.msn.com/Vip/Gallery/BMW/M%20Coupe/2.asp
texrb
I agree with msu.....

Honda' concept "X" is the ugliest (although concept only)
Pontiac's Aztec is ugliest in production!

If Honda's concept "X" is the prototype for their "MDX clone" - then I don't think Acura will lose any MDX customers to the Honda division

I saw a Rendezvous today at an intersection as I was driving through and all I could think was "God that's ugly, what is it.... ", and then I saw the nameplate. They'll need a few more celebrity's to sell that think. I don't think Tiger Woods alone will do it.

While it's not exactly my cup of tea, I still think it's got an intersting style about it.
wmquan
I agree that it's interesting, but, IMHO, when you see one in person the effect is pretty strong. You expect a really beautiful BMW (like a Z3 or Z8) but then get the rear. The front of the car is fine.
msu79gt82
... the car does not know what it wants to be. It does not know if it is coming or going.

A vehicle's styling should make a statement, not ask a question!
AtlantaMDX
Hmm... looking from the back. I guess maybe I need to go check it out in person....
wmquan
These views may give you a better idea. In a way it's kind of cool but in person, I just can't warm up to it.

MoDX
The M-Coupe has a great front end, but I'm wondering why they decided to stick it on a Honda Civic. ;) At least thats what the pics look like, maybe it looks better in person (or on my driveway?)

Thanks for posting the pics.
golfski
I had the opposite reaction for the M coupe. I saw photographs and thought it was ugly, but when I saw one in person, I kind of liked the look. It's probably not a design that would be classified as "beautiful", but it IS pretty purposeful looking, especially from the rear (with the quad exhausts, as well as the wheels and tires - which are huge). In person, it reminded me slightly of a TVR (I think the model that I'm thinking of was called the Vixen) - that was a beautiful design, IMHO.

With regard to the Buick Rendezvous - it's sort of funny that this is supposed to be the "good looking" version of the Aztec. Can you imagine being the design team tasked with making a "good looking" car out of the Aztec??? Hope they were well paid because it must have been very dissatisfying work.....
AtlantaMDX
The M Coup has a certain "batmobile" look to it. :)

That's as good a term for it as I've heard. Let me know what you think when you see one in person. Problem with photos is that you don't get a full idea of the vehicle's actual size and scale. I see a handful around here, mostly coming out of the Microsoft campus (I live outside their main campus in Redmond ... so I get to see plenty of interesting vehicles ... from Passats to Accords to Hummers to Ferraris to Porsches to Beetles).

Reminds me of the story of how Bill Gates got an exotic BMW sports car imported from Germany. They wouldn't let it out of the dock because it wasn't street-legal. So he had a team of techs down there legalizing it (either that, or greasing some palms).

I guess there's more than one way to "legalize" a car. :) I'll let you know when I see the batmobile (aka M coupe) in person :).

I worked for an industrial design studio for a while and I remember a quote "drawn by a 14 year old". The Aztek looks like it got first place in a high school "car of the future" design contest ... circa 1962.

At least the Vehicross makes a strong functional statement. I considered it for a while but the interior lacked any style at all and was way too small for my needs.

I also saw a Buick thing today that looked like an attempt to salvage the Aztek into a tamer SUV/minivan clone.

Avalanche doesn't bother me ... form follows function.

M Coupe ... wondered what it was for months when I saw one in the parking lot at work. Now I just wonder how the young IT support guy can afford it.
A2MDXer
This one may not beat the Aztek but I think it beats the Avalanche. It's the 2002 Escalade EXT. What is Caddy doing?

davegood
That is one ugly car -- at least the Aztec is relatively cheap. If you have no taste in car designs, there no reason to spend twice as much as an Aztec for this POS. You can look just as bad in an Aztec for 1/2 price.
dmyles
Without a DOUBT, the award has to go to Aztec. I actually don't think I've ever even seen one on the road. Everytime I see it on TV, I wonder who the heck would be seen in that thing.

I have to admit though that I did find the Vehicross striking. I've only see one on the rod (in Atlanta). It's out there, but not in an ugly way. But probably a bit TOO out there for most people.
msu79gt82
Azteks - Relatively cheap! I sure hope so. They must be heavily discounted around here. I am seeing them with an increased (alarming?) frequency - almost one per day:( I just hope that as many as I see does not truely reflect how many actually like them:D
Mark
I know we are talking about new cars here, but I'll have to say that when I look at almost any car (except an Aztek), I catch myself saying "At least it's not as bad as an AMC Matador (mid 70's). That car is laugh out loud ugly (IMO).
hondacuraworld
The only thing worse than that Matador is the Matador Barcelona Coupe.....it was black, and had all gold trim.....along with twin yawning lions badges on either side of the targa vinyl roof.

Came across this article:

http://www.auto.com/industry/iwirf2_20011002.htm

Which says, in part:

quote:
The Aztek, which has failed to live up to GM's lofty sales expectations since it was launched last year, is the most beloved entry-level SUV among owners of those types of vehicles, according to a new survey released on Monday.

The vehicle took top spot in a J.D. Power and Associates study of the attitudes of new vehicle owners, beating out Hyundai Motor Co.'s Ltd.'s Santa Fe and Toyota Motor Corp.'s RAV4.

So, there are Aztek enthusiasts out there; I was wondering if there is an Aztek site like our own beloved acuramdx.org. Anyone see anything?

Yeah, it's a tossup between the G-Class and the Aztek (the Element might move up on that list, though...). I'm leaning towards Aztek - interestingly, I was reading an article about the new designer GM was bringing on board to revamp things because, in the words of the magazine, some GM cars were starting to look more like "angry kitchen appliances". I think that sums it up...:2:
2002 Acura MDX!
OK, the cars that 2002 acura mdx! think is the most stupidest cars to have and the produce is........

Honda Element (TOO BOXY!!!!!!!)
All the cars from Buick (One word,:28: )
Aztec (Styling too sharp)
BMW Z4 (Don't like the head light design)
BMW M-coupe (Who whats a hatch tiny 2-door hatch back?!?!?! and too expensive, WASTE OF MONEY IF YOU BOUGHT IT!!!!!)
Isusu Trooper (Styling too old, RESTYLE it!!!!!)
Ford ZX2 (Not my kind of car)
Saturn ION (Worse Saturn ever seen)
Mercedes G500 (waste of $$$ and old school styling)

That's it enjoy.

Some car manufacturer makes hard to spell or "Where the hell did that name from" names. E.g Rendezous. I said I hate all the cars from Buick because I don't know how to spell Rendezvous (and I hate all the cars from Buick anyway)

M-coup... well.. it's a long nose civic hatch back but it's 2 or 3x the price?

X-5 - I love the front and the side.. but it's.. BUTT UGLY!.. really..

Many new little cars from Toyota now looks really strange.. makes me feel like the car had been hit.. but yet it's brand new..

AZTEC hands down is the ungliest, although there are quite a few of them out there. It's better to be bland, than down right ugly. Besides, isn't the Aztec the car you can put up a tent in ?
