'02 MDX Highway Milage Sucks - Click HERE for Original Thread

My '02 MDX has started giving me around 17 mpg highway milage. It is a dealer maintained vehicle. It started happening after an engine flush. I took it to the dealer but they said "everything" is working as expected. Of course, that is not true as I used to get regulary a highway milage of 23-24 for years. Air filter looks good and I am not handy to go further into spark plugs, fuel filter check. It has 52K miles and I always put premium gas on it. Can anyone suggest me what can be done?

Thanks.

I've had mine for about 8 months now. I avg. around 17 mpg according to the computer history and only get over 20 if I dump the tanks worth on a road trip. I only have 50k miles, I had no idea I should be expecting more....

Its running smoothly? Mine was running a bit rough recently and I took it in. They changed EGR valve (I think that's what they did, not sure) and that helped.

Also, its getting warm. Did you start using the "Auto" mode for the cooling? I try to set mine to "A/C Off" unless I really need AC. It makes a huge difference in the mileage I get.

I guess it's running smooth, I don't really have any frame of reference. Well it's as smooth as ever...

And it's not always on full auto. It's usually a auto temp, with manual fan speed.

I think it is a bit rough at around 50-55 mph. But that might be body vibration (after all it a 5 yr old truck). There is no heating. Do you think it needs tuning at 52K miles? In fact I have a photo of the screen that showed 26 mpg at highway driving!! I have never seen that goes above 17, no matter where and which condition I drive in last six months. First I thought the meter reading was wrong. Then I calculated manually using amount of gas I put and the total miles I am getting....meter is ok. This number is without A/C on or the climate control in auto mode.

I have an '02 MDX (with 93k miles) and have no complaints with regard to fuel economy.

I actually just averaged 28.3 MPG on a 45-mile trip I just took this past weekend. Granted, it was under optimal, highway driving conditions: no traffic, no stop signs, and very few stoplights. Still, it's above the manufacturer's spec, so I just figured I'd share.

Did you have your Transmission Replaced?

We had our Transmission replaced with a rebuilt unit under warranty and our highway mileage went from approx 24 mpg to like 19. I am suspecting it is the rebuilt transmission that has something to do with this. We also have a 2001 with about 95K miles.

ummm... you sure you didnt just reset your trip computer when you were registering those higher numbers? I have an '02 as well and average 16.9 mpg with mixed city & highway driving. We have had it since it was brand new and never "averaged" the type of #'s you indicate. I can average about 20 mpg on extended road trips but thats few and far between. Try resetting your trip computer before you do your highway driving and your numbers will improve. However once you start to mix in city driving your #'s will decrease. Check out this link pretty much right on the nose as far as I am concerned.

I guess the only exception I can think of is we once had a member (on this board...wayne gerdes ) who has moved on that was into "hypermiling" and was getting killer milage, but I think for your average Joe's your numbers are in line. Good luck.
