ok, I tried to unscrew the 4 air filter screws with a 10" long phillips screwdriver (no.2). Looks like a misfit.

If anyone managed to use a phillips screwdriver I would like to know what number(size) they used ? The local hardware shops have only no. 2s.

If anyone used a socket wrench+extension, can you please give me the size, any info that will help me buy the exact tools. BTW, I never knew that you could use a wrench to undo such screws. I guess that shows I am new to DIYs.

I must confess, I never expected changing air filters in my MDX to be such a challenge. :(

Extension with a 1/4" socket & #1 phillips bit with a little electric tape around it ought to snag her.

2nd that, although I used a metric socket equivalent. Magnetic helps...these things are easy to drop....

Thanks! I did a search (change air filter) and looks like I missed this post or I need to really work on my search techniques. :o

I think I understand how this wrench, bits work now. I'm slowly beginning to find use for all the tools in the garrage. Learning new things (and exposing my ignorance) every day.

All I used was a long philip screw driver (from 99 cent store, a wooden handle too!) to remove the 4 screws, got to admit that Acura really make it hard to do any maintainence (same for most Hondas). The screws are always retained with the cover so no worry for dropping thoase screws. It took like 2 minutes so you locate those 4 corners where the screws are.

I changed it every 15,000 miles.:2:

BTW, if you are complaining about changing air filter, wait till you change the pollen filter or worst the spark plugs, you will really be yelling at Acura's designers.:o

I did not have any major problem with the screws, but getting the big air "hose" disconnected was a bear. Couldn't remove the cover without getting that off.

I think I will just pay someone to do the sparkplugs and pollen filter then.

After years of being taken for granted one day I walked into an auto zone shop and asked the guy if it was difficult to change the spark plugs on my camry. I bought a $6 tool and spark plugs (which requires no setting-don't remember the exact term) and he even showed me the steps. It was a 5 minute job and from that day I have decided to attempt to do things myself. Until now I was under the assumption that I would be able to change the sparkplugs on the mdx. I guess not.

Spark plugs are supposedly good for 100,000 miles.

I do not intend to keep the MDX that long. So far I haven't even seen them. I cannot remember ever owning a vehicle where I did not do all routine maintenance myself.

You took the hard road...air hose doesn't have to be disconnected. There's enough room to slip the filter in and out, and give it a quick wipe without all that work.

Don't let me discourage you, it's not easy but doable, with proper tools, you can still do it, it's not just about saving $$ but I always want to dYI if I can. You will need 2 short extensions for the spark plug socket due to limited access space, a hexagon socket & instruction in the manual will get you start in the front 3 spark plugs, the other 3 in the rear will take a little bit more time due to space limitation. You will save some $150 with 1 hour of labor.:2:
