Honda has finally addressed the issue that was really bugging me!.
The new MDX was supposed to be a "moving icon of safety", but the substandard REAR IMPACT results were extremely dissappointing, considering all the hype they put out regarding the new "ACTIVE" head restraint design.
I had quietly suspected that they may fix this issue for the '08 model, but they've already gone ahead and taken care of it, and I give them 3 thumbs up :29: :29: :29: for that!!! (The design change is for MDXs built after MAY 2007)
One must remember that a REAR IMPACT is one of the MOST DANGEROUS EVER, because it is TOTALLY out of your control. You could be stopped and an SOB a**hole moron talking on a cell phone or distracted by something else could hit you from behind and there's nothing you can do about it.
BTW, Anyone hear about the nutjob driving a big rig at 55-60 mph, that rear-ended a Minivan stopped in the slow lane and killed 3 small kids, here in Mission Viejo, CA???

Another impressive safety aspect is the SIDE IMPACT result which earned a GOOD rating (INCLUDING THE STRUCTURE of the safety cage, where even other top scoring vehicles such as the RDX, which got a good overall rating, got only an "Acceptable" for the cabin structure)

......why I do not buy a FIRST YEAR model. Let the others "test" it for me!!
....I DO NOT need to be the "first on the block" to have one  ......of course, if you're a billionaire and can buy a new vehicle every six months it doesn't matter I guess. Everything is "relative". As for me, the 2008 model year is right round the bend! |

THATS AWEFUL!!
a few days ago near my house in North-west Houston, a cop was driving drunk in his squad car and rear ended a car stopped at a red light and in turn that guy rear ended the guy in front of him at the light
luckily nobody was hurt, except the cop, he had a broken wrist and is in the hospital, but today they charged him with drunk driving....he was a cop for 16yrs or so |

| did acura change the headrest design or the seat design entirely? If just the headrests, i am sure that owners can replace them at a cheaper cost rather than the entire seat |

No it's not just the headrests. From what I understand, there is an internal mechanism within the active restraint system that was modified to improve the ratings. |

| any hope of Acura doing a recall on MDX before May 07? Class action lawsuits would be possible if someone gets injured IMO because MDX is basically stating there is a problem because of the design change in the headrest and rear crash zone. I know it might cost them $$ but a lawsuit will cost them MORE:rolleyes: |

I doubt there will be a retrofit. The 1 st gen MDX was rated poor. The 2007 increased that rating to marginal. The design tweak then increased the rating to good. So they improved it greatly over the 1st gen but were able to tweak it even more to get a good rating. A lawsuit would have to argue that they increased the safety but not enough - but the baseline is an increase over a poor rating. A retro fit opens the door to the cost of design changes for the 1st gen model years also. |

I suspect that this may not be a huge change, simply one to perform better on the tests. The IIHS places the headrest in the 'middle' position and reads the g-force sensors on the crash dummy. The rating is based on the readings off of the sensors in the dummy's head. Honda figured out the parameters and tweaked the headrest to do better on the test. This test was the only thing preventing the MDX from getting on the IIHS's "Top Safety Pick" list. Since Honda's current marketing strategy heavily bent toward safety, this was a must for them.
If you've got a pre-May 2007 MDX, don't worry. It's plenty safe. Just make sure the headrest is set at the right height for you. |
