Comfort vs Sport Mode - Click HERE for Original Thread

Dr. Ken
Having just acquired the Sport model, I am trying to figure out the use of "comfort" vs "sport". I can tell the difference somewhat, but it is not really that noticeable to me. So, I use "comfort" when driving city streets and "sport" when out on the freeways. Any advice or thoughts on this?

Dr. Ken,
Look inside your glove box. You should have a cd provided by Acura explaining the wonderful benefits of the "sport" suspension, better known as "Active Damper Suspension". It explains it in detail. I find my self driving more in "sport" mode as opposed to "comfort mode".....When I have passengers I leave it in comfort mode. Sport mode is when you are by yourself having some fun......If you were to replace the system at YOUR cost, you would know the difference between "sport and comfort" ......One example is to drive over a speed bump in comfort mode, then repeat it in sport mode, you'll notice a difference.......Basically sport mode lessons "nose dive, rear squat dive, over steer and under steer.......and makes it like on RAILS as oppose to Cadillac float feel when in comfort....

You should post this in the 07 forum as the 1st gen folks are still in denial about the "sport vs. comfort" mode settings.......LMAO !!!!
Congrats on the acquisition
Hope this helps! Now go have some fun in your Sport mode......:1: :1:

When I first got my MDX I could tell the difference, but it didn't seem like all that big of a deal. Now, after >2000 mi, I can sense the difference much more acutely and it's actually a fairly big difference. I guess it takes a while to know what you're feeling for. Plus, no matter which mode you're in, the system is still tweaking the dampers all the time, so this can confuse the situation a bit. I think the button/mode mostly tells the system how to bias things, but it can still choose a sport-mode level of damping even in comfort mode, and vice-versa.

I tend to use comfort on the freeway or with passengers, and sport mode when I want sharper responses around town. Comfort mode is definitely "floatier" on undulating roads or when shifting direction. Sport mode has much less lean, dive, and squat as a rule. One thing you can do is rapidly oscillate your steering wheel a small amount when travelling around 30 mph (enough to get the weight of the car shifting back and forth) and you'll feel the difference between sport/comfort.

I'd really like to understand more details about how the system adjusts the dampers (not mechanically, I mean the logic), what inputs it uses and how it uses them, and so forth, if anyone comes across that information.

I've covered that a couple times already here. Search around and you'll find it.

I have watched the video and understand how it works, but I just wanted to get advice on where and when to use the suspension option.

it is always in use, just more so in sport mode. It is your call what "feels" best in the conditions your in.......

SuperTech, thank you and I found those postings and hadn't seen them before. I guess I'm wondering about a few things:

* how the dampers know to tighten up, whether in sport or comfort mode. You mentioned if it "senses" a big deflection coming up, how does it know this?

* If I'm in comfort mode, and I start throwing the vehicle around and playing race car driver, will the system tighten up the dampers for a while? To put it another way, if the system tightens up the dampers for some reason, and has to do so consistently, will it at some point stay in that tighter mode for a period of time?

* Similarly, in sport mode, does the system ever decide to relax the dampers, say in steady state driving on a pretty smooth road?

Those sorts of questions are what I was wondering about how the logic in the system works.

Thanks so much. I really enjoy reading your posts on a variety of subjects!

Bruce
