Looking to buy a new car in the coming weeks and my short list is down to MDX, RX350 and Tahoe. I will of course test drive them all, but have some questions for the experienced MDX owners...
1. I have a quote for $44K out the door for Tech Package and $46K out the door for Sport/Tech Package. This is about $1000 over invoice and I understand people are getting invoice and maybe even a little lower so I plan on negotiating a little lower when checkbook is 'on the table'. Any thoughts?
2. Is the Sport package really worth it or does it take a second or two to shift when in 'manual mode' and is the sport suspension that much better? Any negatives to getting sport other than the extra cost?
3. I am 6'5" tall...should I be concerned with head/leg room in the driver's seat of the MDX??
4. I need a hitch reciever for a bike rack (no real towing planned) and the dealer told me that the MDX comes with wiring harness, etc. already installed and it would be much cheaper to get a reciever from other than Acura..he really talked me out of it. Does the MDX come with everything needed to install an aftermarket reciever?
5. Cost to add auto dim rear view mirror seems high...with rear window solar tint and plan to add additional tint, is auto dim rearview mirror really necessary???
6. Anyone already drive both an MDX and RX350? How do they compare in interior room, power, acceleration, handling, etc.?
7. Anything other suggestions appreciated......thinking black with light leather interior with bsm and maybe sport 'step tubes' and front/rear wheel wheel well moldings.....
I am sure I will think of more, but on paper the MDX looks like the winner (space, power, etc.)...
Thanks!! |

1. $500 over invoice is a good deal
2. I've got sport and like it. You have to decide if it's worth it.
3. Test drive them all
4.?????
5. I was OK without auto mirror, but still added it later(installed myself, bought on ebay for $220)
6. MDX compared to RX - more room, more noise, more power, more gas consumption, firmer ride, stiffer steering, less luxurious, more aggresive appearence. Love my Sport/RES.
7. Black looks great but in NorthEast it's a nightmare to keep it clean
Go for it unless you prefer plush ride of RX. |

I think that is pretty good.

You need to drive both and see - did not make a diff for me.

Lots of HR in the MDX. One annoying thing, the keys dangle off the end of that long key fob and hit me knee.
4. Does the MDX come with everything needed to install an aftermarket reciever?
Not sure

I like the auto dim and directional info. Should me standard.
6. Anyone already drive both an MDX and RX350? How do they compare in interior room, power, acceleration, handling, etc.?
Agree with previous post - but MDX has two extra seats which I use from time to time. Better audio in MDX by far.
7. Anything other suggestions appreciated......thinking black with light leather interior with bsm and maybe sport 'step tubes' and front/rear wheel wheel well moldings.....
Sounds cool - go for max accessorites for free or a discounted price.

Yes, when I say out the door, I mean all costs included.....sounds about exactly the deal you got. If I go with $46K out the door, I am going to negotiate some extras (BSM, etc., etc.)...I didn't realize that the auto dim mirror also has a compass...that is almost a must and if if it now part of the MMI, then I might have to get that included... |

Thanks...when you say more noise, do you mean good noise or bad noise? I like engine noise, etc. but not rattles, clunks, etc. etc. I have a tendency to listen to the radio somewhat loud so a little road noise wouldn't bother me...... |

2. Is the Sport package really worth it?
Yes. IT turns the vehicle into a big sports sedan. The Sport suspension is not just "two mode", it's Active. Read up on it and you'll be impressed.
All MDX have the manual mode shifting, not just Sport. It downshifts immediately, and takes a second or two to upshift.
3. I am 6'5" tall.
You've been tall all your life. Only you will know.
4. I need a hitch reciever for a bike rack (no real towing planned) and the dealer told me that the MDX comes with wiring harness, e
No-there is no wiring harness installed. THe transmission nd sterring coolers are already installed however, which is much more important. The Acura hitch is $350, harness is $150, pre-cut piece of rear bumper plastic is $100. It tucks up higher under the bumper than the aftermarket hitches. I got mine installed for $800 (including the parts above.)
5. Cost to add auto dim rear view mirror.
THe part is $245. It takes 15 minutes to do it carefully. DIY. The standard mirror is manual dim.
7. black with light leather interior.
You will have to hand wash the black every week. A car wash will put noticeable scratches in it. Wheel well moldings look pretty cool, but they're $350 for the parts. |

I'll just hit the questions:
1. Sport Package is, imo, something close to but short of a necessity :). From everything I gather (though the MDX at the house is older), the pricing isn't unreasonble.
2. Regarding your height -- I don't see how any of those three vehicles will give you ample space.
3. Light leather interior isn't a bad idea, but it wouldn't be my first choice (but then again, I'm from Seattle).

I was just wondering how the 07 MDX is less luxurious then the RX350?
I know it has real wood but does that make it more luxurious or more elegant. |

1. I picked up a Sport/entertainment last week for $43,500 ($500 below invoice) and received 10% off accessories installed. I added sport running boards, day/night mirror, and fender trim. The total with those items was $44,9k
2. Sport is definitely worth it, IMO.
3. I am 6'5" and am very comfortable with the MDX. I tried the Lexus and could not fit comfortably in the RX350. I find the shoulder room in MDX excellent. I looked at the XC90, Q7, GL450 and SRX. The MDX was easily the best fit since it is the widest of the bunch. I just completed a 1000 mile trip in it and had no problems staying comfortable.
4. Don't know
5. Day/night mirror is a must have, IMO. Side steps also are a must have since they block some of the underbody that is visible from the side without them.

1. After reading this forum way too much over the past few months, I think it really depends on where you live, how many dealers, inventory, etc. Whilke some people on the east coast were getting 500 or close to invoice seemingly easily , it took me a month and a half and serious in-person negotiating to get 700 above invoice on a Sport Ent in So Cal. I probably could have done better but I really didn't want to drive all over the place just to save a couple of hundred. Set a reasonable price you are willing to pay and drive the dealer towards that. Kudos to the others that have done much better, I think it'd help if you told us how (Internet quote only, in person, over the phone, etc).
2. I originally wanted the sport package for the wheels. However, after I bought it I found there really is quite a noticable difference between the comfort and sport modes. I use comfort around town, speed bumps, etc as it gives a bit more and sport on the freeway/highway. It really tightens up and has great handling in the curves. I think it's well worth it if you desire a bit of sport from your SUV.
3. I'm 6.0 and have plenty of room with the seat not fully back.
4. I don't know.
5. I have the auto dim mirror in my Maxima and well, it's fine. I think it's more needed if your car sits lower as many SUVs can blind you quite easily. I didn't go for it because I wanted to try it without it first. With the windows being tinted on the MDX, I really don't think it's worth it IMO.
6. The RX is luxurious but smaller. I am also not quite fond of the interior layout - reminds me of a Highlander. Acceleration on the 350 seems good as does the X, but it's also lighter than the X. You'll get better service with the Lexus, but this wasn't a deciding factor for me. As many have said on this forum, I think the RX is a feminine car so I just couldn't do it.
7. I went for the sport side steps. The others look clunky IMO. I also opted for BSM as I fear dings. The roof rails will be needed if you intend on taking road trips and want to use the 3rd row.
Go for the X, you won't be disappointed. |

I'd add a 05/06 used Lexus GX470 to your list....my wife's family is a huge Lexus and my dad-in-law drives a fully loaded 05 GX470...
Everytime we go to their house, I 'trade' in my 05 MDX and use his SUV for our stay there.
I've also test-drove the new MDX but for some, the GX470 appears to offer more of a true luxurious look than the MDX. I'm 6"1 and prefer the seating of the GX more than my own MDX

1) I paid $1000 over invoice in Texas. I have seen people claim to get up to $4000 below invoice, but who knows. Still, anywhere close to or a little below invoice would be acceptable.
2)I have the Tech/Ent package. If I did it again I would buy the Sport. Does that answer that?
3) I am 6'0" plenty of room. Can't answer for you at 6'5" but I imagine you don't fit in many vehicles well.
4)Don't know
5)Yes, I have driven both. Both cars drive very nicely. It becomes personal preference. I would take either car though. Toyota...Honda... how could you go wrong? It's like buying a TV today. 20 years ago you could really tell the difference, today everybody has the same technology. The only thing I can add about the RX350 is that it is ending it's model life soon and a major remodel is coming in 2009 just like the MDX had for 2007. I may check that out in 2 years.
6)Black is a very nice color, but I just could not opt for that in Texas. Am I crazy? The interior is 25 degrees hotter than a white one on the parking lot. I went with white. Not as flashy, but still sharp. If I had a cool climate, I would definately do black. |
