Well, I sneezed too hard and managed to cracked my windshield  !!!

I don't even know how the crack got there, and I'm the only one that drives the car. I was just getting out of it one day, and noticed it. At first i thought it was a bug splatter, but to my dismay it wasn't.

I'm amazed at how easy these things get chips and cracks. It is not a huge crack, so I'll probably get it in to a repair shop and have it done, but I had 97 Explorer before this car, and never once had this problem, and I ran that explorer hard (probably why everything else on it broke).

Have you had your windshield replaced? if so, how many times? Is this a known issue that was brought to light at some point? I've seen quite a few other threads on here concerning windshields.

sorry guys, i posted in the wrong section, but feel free to reply anyway.

Thanks

I believe the 03s have the "new and improved" windshield. I know the early adopters (pioneers, if you will) complained about the windshield being thin. Do you know if it was an OEM windhshield or a different brand?

I don't know which it is. Is there a way that I can tell if it is by looking at something? I appears to have the original strips, tints, etc.

It should have the the word Honda or the Honda "H" somewhere on the window. Upper corner of the driver's side, maybe?

I have a nice big crack all the way across the windshield. The culprit was a tiny rock that created a very small pit (not even fixable), that cracked the next day.

Very disappointed in the glass quality

I guess that is a good thing about Florida. Cracked windshield=free replacement through insurance, and they are not allowed to up your premiums. Move here and you will not have to worry about it... :)

I'll be finding out soon what a windshield is worth. My cost will be my $ 500 deductable on the insurance policy :(

$400 or so around here

Well, I hope that my windshield is fixable. Called my insurance company today to find out what my policy covered, and they told me that I had a $1000 deductible ... my jaws dropped when I heard that (that would have been good if i used gold plated windshield, or something along those lines).

The crack is minor (more like a chip), so hopefully it can be fixed.
Sinecure
I'm on my 3rd windshield on my '01. About to be 4th. I figure windshields are good for about 50K miles before they get so pitted that you want them replaced anyway. I find that every couple of winters I get hit with a rock that chips/cracks it. Since my insurance has a $100 glass deductible, I don't repair the cracks if its time for a new one anyway (like right now). Most insurance companies have an arrangement where they'll repair chips for free.

Either way, look into getting a lower glass deductible on your policy. It doesn't cost much (like a few bucks more each 6 months for me) and getting a new windshield is a pleasure (wipers work better, way less glare when the sun is low, etc.). As stated above, some states have mandatory zero deductible on glass. Massachusetts is that way and it has spawned a profitable little industry for mobile glass replacement (watch for the "Giant Glass" ads when the Red Sox are on TV). I'm certain that a lot of people there just take a ball-peen hammer to their windshield when it gets pitted and they want a new one. California doesn't have that mandate but I asked my insurance agent for a lower glass deductible (Farmers Ins). Given that I've used that service 4 times now (2 new windshields, 1 windshield chip repair, 1 passenger window), I'd say I've gotten my money's worth.

If you've got a chip and you don't repair it, be careful on really hot or really cold days. If you park on an uneven surface on a hot/cold day, I think the combination of the heat, the torque from twisting the car and the weakness caused by the small crack makes it likely that the crack will spread across the windshield.

I have a small chip right now that I've had since the fall. Now that its summer I'll probably take care of replacing it. Winter is brutal on my windshield since I put on about 18K miles driving to Tahoe every winter. The chip hasn't spread, but I know if I took my fist to the windshield a bit, it would spread in an instant. Now that its hot, I'm just waiting for the crack to spread.

Wow, that was long-winded.

The best option my insurance company has was that with a $250 deductible, which will increase my insurance to about $10 every 6 months. I think I'll look into that, since it appears that windshield cracks on the MDXs are so prevalent.

I just noticed this past weekend that I have two dings in my windshield. One is a little spec; I guess you would call it a pit in the windshield. The other is a crack about a cm wide.

I am pretty upset as I have only had the vehicle for less than 3 months and never had a chip, pit or crack in my TL which I owned since 2005. I had a Pathfinder for about 3 years before that and never had anything either although I remeber getting many rock hits that I thought would cause some damage for sure, but didnt.

I plan to get the little crack fixed, but dont want to be doing this every couple months. Nobody in Alberta buys glass insurance as the premiums are not worth it and then if you claim you pay your deductible and then your rates go up so its cheaper to buy your own new glass.

There is another thread in here where somebody said the windshield was strong & good quality, and he/she believed there was a film over the glass unlike others that prevents chips from spreading into large cracks. Not too sure about that.....
